MacWilliams Masters Winter Conditions
Each year, the Roxbury races begin and end
in winter. In between, the weather is mostly pretty nice, but this week we
got a reminder that harsh weather is in the offing with our first cold race
since March. Brian MacWilliams took off from the start like he was running
a hundred meters and held the lead the whole way to take his fourth
straight Roxbury race.
That left the battle for second among Keyless Bob Derringer, Coach Mike Abraham and Vernon LeRoux. They were all together at the mile, and shuffled around a number of times before Keyless Bob pulled away a bit. Still, only eleven seconds separated second from fourth.
Peg Molina, less than a week after her
3:36:25 Philadelphia Marathon, finished first for the women, about two minutes
ahead
of Nora Hulton.
Peg wasn't the only Roxbury runner in Philadelphia. Nate Beatty ran his first marathon in 3:48:52, with support from mom Kyle Gancher, as well as teammate Pete Matheissen and his cousins Jesse and Mike. Kyle started the race, too, but when things started going badly, she dropped out so she could run the last few miles with Nate.
In other marathon news, Carl Hunt is off to run yet another marathon next week, this one in Missouri.
Two of the new names in this week's results are Bob Derringer's brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Maria Rufe from Pennsylvania, running their very first races ever. We're pleased they picked Roxbury for their debut.
Conditions were just a little bit treacherous on the downhill start on West Apple Lane. There were a few slick spots on South Street, and the big climb up Hemlock starting just past the two mile mark was entirely snow covered.
A few runners were a little tired this week, after participating in the highly successful Thanksgiving Day Race from the church in the center of town. There were 103 finishers there, including a great number of Roxbury Regulars. The race was part of the Race for the Cure series and benefited research on breast cancer. It featured an appearance by the purple clad "Kathy Brady Bunch" supporting Kathy Brady in her ongoing cancer treatments. Save those t-shirts, folks. We're all praying for another appearance next year to celebrate good news.
Today's pictures feature winner Bryan MacWilliams, sitting in his trunk before the race, and a rare Bob-Scott-Bob photo in the parking lot. The Bobs are Satterlee and Lewis, and the Scott is Benjamin. See all that cold, slippery snow?
