Parking Lot Plowed!  Races Begin!

Racing returned to Roxbury this weekend.  All week, people worried and fretted whether or not it would snow.  Would the parking lot be plowed?  Would it be just too cold to run?  Well, all is right with the world, the sun came up, and the thermometer climbed above ten degrees, so we had a race.  Thirty five people who didn't have anything better to do, or perhaps just didn't know any better, converged on the Hurlburt Recreation Area , and thundered on down West Apple Lane at Dave Harvey's two commands: "Runners steady.  Go!"

Bryan MacWilliams, Adam Kozak and Chris Bacich took Dave's command seriously, though it was cold and hard to run fast.  By the time they turned on to South Street, they had a substantial lead on Ken Merrick, who, in turn, had a good gap on Keyless Bob Derringer and last year's points champion, Mike Abraham.  Those with long memories will remember that Abe won last year's closing race, on this same course, with a time of 14:10.

People faded, other people sped up a bit, and Ken Merrick moved up out of fourth place to take second, while the Old Fossil moved out of seventh to go past Derringer and Abraham to take fifth.

Among the women, Marge Demarrais picked up where she left off to win in 16:01, a couple of seconds slower than she ran in December.  Pam Quist was a minute and a second back.

As we were looking for pictures, we realized that we don't have many pictures with snow and ice in them.  The last couple of years have been relatively mild.  We'll try to remember the camera next week and fix that.  In the mean time, we have Rapid Lynn Zuback, who is at least wearing long sleeves.  Nobody ran in shorts this week.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com
