Last Monday's blizzard was still strewn
across the parking lot at the Hurlburt Recreation Area, buttressed by a plow
ridge of mammoth proportions. The green outhouse stood a lonesome,
trackless 50 meters
from the road. Nobody was so desperate to try to make the trek.
The weather was awful. It was a cold drizzle that turned to rain later in the day. There was a nagging wind. The Rec Area's neighbors laughed at us and called us "incorrigible." Further discussion revealed that she was just being polite. She meant "nuts." And not just "a little nuts." Still, warmer weather eventually comes (see photo of Dave Harvey at the right.)
Last week's winner, Bryan MacWilliams, continued his winning streak, off like a shot from the starting line. He built a big lead on Dangerous Ken Merrick over the first half mile. There's a reason we call him "Dangerous", though, and he eroded young Bryan's lead over the last two miles. He never caught him, though, and ended up six seconds short. Last week, the gap was eight seconds, but Bryan slowed down a second this week, and Ken sped up one second.
Pam Quist was 38 seconds faster this week to grab the Women's crown over Peg Molina.
PQ's improvement this week was notable. Most people were within about five seconds of their times from last week, but Dave DeBoy was an exception. Last week, he ran 19:01. This week, he sliced 51 seconds off of that to finish in 18:10. It was only worth four places, though, moving him from 19th to 15th place. Keep up the improvement, Dave!
