Dave Hunt used to be a little kid who sometimes came to
the Roxbury Races with his Dad. Now he's 16, quick, and winning races.
We don't (yet) keep records of oldest and youngest Roxbury winners, but if we
ever do, this one will be on the list. (Fossil tells me that Bryan Gagner
or Jon Chesto might have been 15 back when they sometimes won. They have
both since had to leave the state.)
The race would have made good television. At the
mile, all the contenders were together in a big group. At the mile,
though, the non-aggression agreement fell apart, as Dave Hunt burst from the
pack, with Luis Amaral and Mike Abraham in hot pursuit. Hot pursuit didn't
work, though, as the kid pulled away to win by 24 seconds.
Among the women, Marge DeMarrais prevailed in style, besting Pam Quist by 1:18. Marge ran so fast that she was right behind the lead pack at the mile. After the race, both Dan Lamb and Steve Benoit were all wobbly from trying to keep up with her at the finish.
Former roadrace regular Luis Amaral made his first Roxbury appearance in a decade, grabbing second place. It hasn't been quite so long since we last saw Perry Simone, who finished sixth, but he has been scarce for a while. Good to see you both.
In this week's picture, we have Mo van Moffaert, Carl Hunt (That's Carl, not Karl) and Walt Schuttler. Carl and Walt will miss next week's race because they are running a marathon in Delaware. Both are on the 50 marathons in 50 states quest, and are well past the 10 states you need to get the t-shirt and join the club. The fossil, on the other hand, has a "more than 25 Boston Marathons" t-shirt, but, to the best of his rapidly dimming memory, has run marathons in only five states, six if you count ultra-marathons.
Note that Carl Hunt is NOT winner Dave Hunt's father. That's Karl Hunt.
Fossil's 31st Boston and Rapid Lynn Zuback's first will be Monday. Those who want to follow their progress can tune in to www.BostonMarathon.org. Fossil will be wearing # 2881, and Rapid Lynn will be wearing # 13873. Web Guy has lost track of how many times Kyle Gancher has run, but her number is 13358. Are there other Roxbury folks running this year? If so, eMail Web Guy at esandifer@earthlink.net right away and he'll add them to the list.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
