4.3 miles - High
Bridge Road
|
|
It rained on everyone else, but, as far as Mark DePalma
was concerned,
the
sun had never shined brighter. Running only his second Roxbury ever (the
first was two weeks ago on the same 4.3 mile High Bridge Road course), DePalma
won his first ever race. After the race, his smile was the brightest thing
in the parking lot.
Before the race, the "experts" were thinking the race would be between Lou Denaro and Mike Abraham, since Ed Sandifer would be going slowly after last Monday's Boston Marathon. The "experts" thought that probably Abe would win the duel. They were saying "who's that out front" and "he's a morning glory." That's why we run the race, folks! If the "experts" were always right, we could just write down the results beforehand and save ourselves all the trouble of actually showing up and running the race. Web Guy could post next week's results right now. But that's not the way it works. The "experts" were wrong and the next time Mark DePalma goes out in front at the start, people will take him seriously.
Among the women, Nora Hulton prevailed, four minutes ahead
of Sharon Gawe.
In individual rivalries, Al Curtis still can't crack Mark Zerbe's grip. They finish close week after week, but it's always the same way.
Bob Lewis seems to have turned the tables on Tom McNulty. Early in the season, Tom was beating Bob regularly, but lately it's been Bob closing the gap.
Retired mathematics teacher Charles Yagielski is 65 this year (until sometime in September). While he's 65, he intends to run 63 races. Half way through his year, he's about half way through his programme. He finished 25th today. Watch for him to be back, since Roxbury Races are almost every Saturday.
Three Roxbury Regulars ran last Monday's Boston Marathon. The Fossil Ed Sandifer finished his 31st Boston in a row, a streak that began in 1973. Kyle Gancher has several Bostons to her credit now, and Rapid Lynn Zuback did the Patriots' Day run for her first time. All three tell the same story. It was a great day for spectators, but too warm and sunny for runners, and there was a headwind, too. They all ran as they expected for 15 or 16 miles, but then had to slow down because of the conditions. All three swear they will never EVER run another marathon, but they are all liars. You can figure out their stories by checking their 3 kilometer splits online at www.BostonMarathon.org. Also, there's a great picture of Lynn that made the national newspapers. You can see it at http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/030421/168/3uya9.html or at the News Times at http://www.newstimes.com/cgi-bin/dbs.cgi?db=news&view_records=1&id=48162
The top picture is Carl Hunt and Al Mletzko, both of whom missed this week. Carl is running a marathon in Delaware. Al is just missing. The middle picture is Rapid Lynn Zuback, not in the marathon. At the bottom is Walt Schuttler, who also missed this week because he's in Delaware with Carl.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
