3.95 miles - Jeep trail May 17, 2003 |
|
Points leader Mike Abraham, winner of more than a dozen
Roxbury Races in 2002, had not won a single race in 2003.
He had a couple of second places (an a couple of finishes quite a bit farther
back), but the Winner's Circle had eluded him. All that changed this week
as he led a pack of four to the end of Apple Lane. Then he and Steve
Benoit broke away to make it a pack of two, before he ground down Steve to make
it a solo break for the last three miles of the race and win by 32 seconds over
the Fossil, Ed Sandifer.
Meanwhile, Pam Quist finished quite a bit ahead of Nora Hulton to win for the women.
Deeper in the results, veteran Bob Lewis beat his rival of more than 15 years, Scott Benjamin, for the fourth week in a row. For more than a decade, Scott has had the advantage on Bob, but the pendulum swings, and Bob has been winning lately. Scott still has a considerable lead in the points race, though, because he dominated earlier in the season. Neither has missed a race yet this year.
After the results, we have comparative times for the 25 people who ran both this week and last week. The average improvement was 18 seconds, led by Ron Karl, who took just over three minutes off his time. Lou Denaro edged winner Mike Abraham by one second for the Mr. Consistency award. Lou ran the same time both weeks. Sixteen of the 25 improved, and eight slowed down this week.
This week's picture is from the Championship two weeks ago. John Murphy Jr. and Chris Powderly motor towards the finish line. The two tiny dots in the background are Scott Benjamin and Mario Hasz. Note that this week, Murph missed, and Chris, Scott and Mario finished in the opposite order.
Thanks to all those who congratulated Phil on finishing college. The graduation was wonderful, and he'll be off to Chicago for graduate school in the fall. Those of you who have lived with or been teenagers will appreciate what an effort it was for him to get up early enough to take that picture of Kyle a few years ago. He's still recovering from it.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
