Three cheers for the folks who do the finish line.
Indeed,
some weeks they just stand around in the sun, watch the birds and tell funny
stories, but this week
was
cold and wet, one of those miserable mornings that cheerful and optimistic
people try to sell us as a "gardeners' rain". There they were,
wet and miserable just like the rest of us, but they had to just stand there
with the sticks, the stopwatch and the clipboard. They couldn't even do a
lap around the track to try to warm up some. So, this week, let's give a
vote of thanks for the finish line crew, and maybe even double their pay.
In the race itself, the best race was for the women, where Nora Hulton edged Rapid Lynn Zuback by 27 seconds to take the title.
Among the men, Matt Patrick ran with Mike Abraham for the first 3/4 of a mile, until they started down the dirt road, and then just ran away from him, widening his lead, gradually at first, then more at the end. Eventually, Matt beat Abe by 58 seconds, who, in turn, beat the Fossil by 57 seconds.
Mark Andrejccyk ran his best Roxbury yet and beat Lou Denaro for the first time ever to take fourth place.
Lots of runners were a bit tired this morning after last night's race in New Milford. Lynn Zuback described it as a "Moonlight Run hangover." Others, like Mark Andrejczyk, seemed energized by racing twice in just over twelve hours and ran particularly well.
This week's pictures are two shots from February, because that's how the weather felt, and one shot of Dave Harvey, on a warmer day because he worked the finish line on such a cold and rainy one.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
