3.95 miles - Jeep trail August 16, 2003 |

We got three commands this week, instead of our usual two. Adam Levy, with recent experience racing on the track, knew what to do, and went out like a shot. For a while, Lou Denaro was close behind, but he slowly drifted back until the gap at the mile was about 30 yards, with a collection of Dave DeBoy, Ed Sandifer and Paul Teixeira half a minute behind that.
Then, all of a sudden, Adam slowed down, and Lou gained on him, cut the gap steadily for about a mile. At the two mile, Adam took off again, then slowed down again at the three mile mark. Adam was running a speed workout! Lou wasn't up to closing the gap the last mile, so Adam ran away with a victory by a little over a minute. The Fossil came in a minute behind that.
Pam Quist lead the women, fifth place overall.
We know it was 72 degrees at the start today because there's a thermometer hidden on the post on the far side of the pay phone. It's up a little high. That makes it a little hard to see, but it also makes it less likely to be damaged or vandalized.
A number of Roxbury Regulars were working at the Bridgewater Fair today, including one of our Finish Line Fixtures, Dave Harvey. Dave runs the Fried Dough Tent at the Bridgewater Fair, and recruited a good number of our Roxbury friends to help out there. That meant that they couldn't be in Roxbury today, not that any of them would have beaten Adam, the way he was running.
Paul Teixeira ran well today. He credits tinkering with his diet a bit, among other things giving up peanuts. It worked against him at the end, though. Once Fossil got ahead of him, Paul had a flash in which Fossil looked like a peanut. Since Paul doesn't want peanuts any more, he just let Fossil go.
Carl Hunt is running the Pikes Peak Marathon on Sunday (tomorrow). Check results on line here. Good luck, Carl. You're crazy. We approve.
Charlie Yagielski is trying to run 65 races after his 64th birthday and before his 65th, coming up on September 13. Counting Roxbury today, he says he has six to go. Charlie, you're like Carl.
Chas Greystone claims to be unrelated to the new running web site at Greystone Racing. It's a nice site about some of the more challenging races in the area. Charlie himself rode his motorcycle to today's race, then ran easy, resting up a bit for a longer race tomorrow. Read about that at Greystone Racing.
Police still haven't identified the vandals who firebombed Ed Sandifer's son's car three weeks ago. Insurance didn't cover it. It got fixed, and Phil left Friday, with the car, for a year as a graduate student in English at the University of Chicago.
Today's pictures show last week's winner Rapid Lynn Zuback on the top right, checking her watch earlier in the season when people still wore long sleeves. On the left is Lou Denaro, in sunglasses so his fans don't swarm over him.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
