After
last week's effort, Ken Merrick got a second chance at Adam Levy.
The two banged heads for four miles until Ken forged in to the lead, and Adam,
remembering his coach's admonitions to take it easy, backed off. If he
couldn't win, he'd be content with fifth. Ken forged ahead to win by
almost three minutes over architect Dan Lamb.
Meanwhile among the women, Peg Molina outran Rapid Lynn Zuback to take the women's title for the week.
The day was warm, though not hot, and almost humid enough to swim in. The thermometer hidden high on the post behind the telephone (don't tell anybody) recorded 75 degrees at race time.
Three College Freshmen
At least of our fairly regular Roxbury runners are off to college in the next few days. Last week's winner, Adam Levy, will leave for Dartmouth next Saturday. This week's third place finisher Jordan Akselrad will be joining his New Milford High School teammate Pete Mattheisen as Freshmen at Northeastern in Boston. Allow us to send them away with two bits of advice. First, have fun. Of course you all should study hard, learn lots, because that's why you're there, but an education is supposed to lead you to a better life, and a "better life" isn't worth it if you don't have fun, too. Second, run carefully. Most freshmen get hurt while running their freshman year. Pay attention to injuries and illness, and either skip workouts or take them very easy if you are sick or hurt. Peer group pressure, and sometimes even coaches, will try to urge you to "tough it out," but, as with all things, be smart and do the right thing. This is the Fossil speaking. The Fossil knows.

Yagielski Update
Charlie Yagielski is at 62 and counting, after today's Roxbury. His plan is to run 65 races betwee his 64th and 65th birthdays. If things go as planned, his 65th race will be the Roxbury Mile, on his 65th birthday on September 13th. With luck, he'll do it, and we'll remember to take his picture.
Pictures
Speaking of pictures, the top picture is of Bob Lewis and Dave Harvey in the pavilion after the Spring Championship several months ago. The lower picture is Mo van Moffaert and Gisela Boelhouwer, both Roxbury residents, and both with hard to spell names.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
