Cooler
weather has arrived and there weren't many other races this weekend, so numbers
were up at Roxbury this week. There were 46 finishers (and at least one
DNF and an unregistered finisher in a stroller),
the
largest field since we had 48 runners for the last race in March.
A field of about ten went down the hill and through the mile together, in about 5:40. There, the group broke up, leaving Mike Abraham and Ken Merrick in the lead. Abe looked fast, but his recent injury cost him several weeks of training, and he dropped off the pace at about a mile and a half. That left Ken Merrick, wearing spiffy new yellow sun glasses, alone in the lead. He went on to win for the tenth time this season. Abe drifted back to finish sixth.
Nate Beatty went out a little slower and finished only 17 seconds behind, but was never closer than that to the lead.
Among the women, Marge Demarrais went out in the lead, but had a tough time getting back up the hill and decided not to finish the race. That left Pam Quist in the lead, and she took her ninth win of the season.
Welcome Back

We had an unusual number of missing people return to Roxbury after long absences this week. We hadn't seen Terry Lyons, David Monti or Steve Benoit since July. John Murphy Jr. had been missing since June, and JT Schemm has been somewhere else since May.
There are a few others still missing. Where has Carl Hunt been, besides Pike's Peak? What about Wayne Blackman and Gregg Scribner. How about Ken Neils and Wayne Blackman?
Fossil in the Hall
This week's Newtown Bee announces that The Fossil will be inducted (induced?) into the Newtown Sports Hall of Fame in their next round of inductees. To save you the trouble of asking him about it (that would only swell his already bloated ego), here's a link to a .pdf file of the article from the Bee. When you load it, it might be a good idea to click the "Rotate Right" icon at the top of your Acrobat Reader, because Web Guy scanned it in sideways.
Pictures
The top picture is a couple of years old, Scott Benjamin in front of a hot air balloon. We use it this week because people who arrived early got to see this same balloon drift over the Hurlburt Rec Area before the race began. In our second picture wee see Mo van Moffaert and Gisela Boelhouwer, both Roxbury residents, and both with hard to spell names.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
