1 mile - The Roxbury Mile September 13, 2003 8:30 am - 61 degrees. Overcast |

The
rains held off for the first ever Roxbury Mile, and runners from New Milford
captured both the Men's and the Women's prizes. Luis Amaral, away from
running for most of the last
several years, duelled Ken Merrick until the finish line was well in sight, then
pulled away for a three second lead. Joan Murphy, a former New Milford
High School star, now out of college and back from what used to be the Soviet
Union, showed some of the same speed she had several years ago and won for the
women by well over a minute.
Lots of people noticed how hard it is to go fast and tied up in the last quarter of a mile. Some people are used to going out slowly and catching people later in the race. That didn't work in the mile, and those "sneaky" runners found themselves watching their rivals finish from well before the finish line.
We'll give them a break next week as we return to more familiar Roxbury distances with a 3.55 mile effort. It won't be the "usual" course, as we have to avoid the bridge construction on Rt 67, so we'll go down Chalybes and then come back up Hemlock.
Carl Hunt
Carl Hunt's fans have been complaining that he hasn't been at Roxbury much lately. We nagged him enough and he finally told us where he's been. A table of his marathons on recent weekends and the ones he plans for the rest of the year is given below. Good luck with it, Carl, but once you get all 50 states, we expect to see you in Roxbury almost every week.
Happy Birthday Charlie
Charlie Yagielski successfully completed his year-long project of running 65 races while he was 65 years old, and celebrated his 66th birthday by running the Roxbury Mile as his 66th race. That's quite an accomplishment, Charlie. Congratulations and Happy Birthday.
Pictures
Above, we have a picture of Mark Losacco, 11th this week in 5:56. Mark ran a 4:26 when he was in college. This picture is from back in March, but it is a warning that cooler weather is on the way.
Below we have Ken Merrick, second this week to fellow Danbury HS alumnus Luis Amaral. Three out of the top five finishers today graduated from DHS. The other two graduated from Brookfield.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
