Boelhouwer, Merrick Win on New Course

In general, people were a little faster this week, on their second chance on the new 3.55 mile Chalybes-Hemlock course.  Roxbury native Gisela Boelhouwer improved by more than anyone else, more than three minutes faster this week than last, and in so doing won her first race of the season.  Congratulations, Gisela.

In the Men's race, Ken Merrick took control within the first mile and won for the twelfth time, even though he only improved by sixteen seconds.

After the race results below, you can find the "improvement results", comparing this week with last week for the 19 people who ran both weeks.

Leaving Roxbury

We learned this week that a few of our dear friends will be leaving the area in the next few months.  Mark Losacco and Gisela Boelhouwer will be moving to that part of the world where it's too far to come to Roxbury every week.  Gisela is going to Calgary, while Mark is going to the Boston area.  There are already weekly races near Boston, but Gisela might have to organize the Roxbury Goes Canadian series herself.  People who move away don't entirely disappear.  We have new eMail from Bob Derringer that we will share next week.

Rookie of the Year and Most Improved

Forms for making nominations on-line will be part of next week's web page. Each year, we give an award for the Most Improved Runner and to the Rookie of the Year.  It's not too early to think about candidates.  If you want to compare people's performances to last year, you can follow the link to the 2002 page at the bottom of the main Roxbury Page.  You can also use that to see if your candidate ran much last year and find out if he/she is a rookie.

Our definition of "rookie" is a little fuzzy.  Basically, a rookie is someone who didn't run "much" last year.  If the person didn't run enough to be a rookie last year, then he/she's a rookie this year.  This makes Lou Denaro a rookie, with one race last year.  So are Mark Losacco, Mario Hasz and Marge Demarrais, but not Tom McNulty or Mark Andrejczyk.

Pictures

The top picture is Al Curtis, at the start.  You can find him again in the crowd scene in the middle picture.  You might be able to pick out some people you know.  In the third picture, we see the picture of Charles Yagielski we mentioned above.  Also, check the points standings because there are new pictures there, too.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
