2003 Roxbury Race #34

5.0 miles - Apple Lane - Squire Road

October 11, 2003

8:30 am, 52 degrees, gloriously sunny with turning foliage

Boelhouwer and Zoldy Win in Foliage

It was a gloriously sunny day and the leaves were just beginning to turn.  There are lots of other races and other things to do this Columbus Day weekend, so attendance was down a little bit, but those who made it enjoyed a fine run in the early fall weather.

For the women, Roxbury's own Gisela Boelhouwer won her second race of the season, two minutes ahead of Katie Neils, who battled it out for second place with Wendy Carlson, only 12 seconds farther back.

Among the men, it was a lead pack of three after a mile and a half, and those three were all over the alphabet, Mark Andrejczyk, Jim Zoldy and the Fossil.  Mark made a break going down the hill, but Jim dumped the Fossil on the up hill and by the top, both he and Fossil had caught Mark.  That's how it stayed, except they kept getting farther and farther apart as the hills wore their legs off.

Walking Lessons

People who stayed late were treated (subjected?) to the comic (pathetic?) spectacle of Fossil trying to give racewalking lessons to Paul Teixeira.  Apparently, Fossil got Paul to buy some line about racewalking being good for your back and helping prevent shin splints.

News from Derringer

Check out last week's eMail from Keyless Bob Derringer.  He's planning to running the Hartford Marathon this week.  Watch for him in the results.  Like a lot of other people, he's hoping to qualify for Boston so he can pay $85 next year ($3.25 per mile) to do it again.

It reminds us what a bargain Roxbury is, where you can run 39 races, over 150 miles, for free, and the other three races, another 14 miles or so, only cost $5 each.

This Week vs Last Week

At the bottom of the page, after the results, we have comparative times for the 15 people who ran this course both last week and this.  Al Mletzko leads the improvement pack with a 5:39 improvement, 16 seconds more improvement than Bob Lewis.  Though only seven people were faster this week and eight were slower, the average improvement was 53 seconds.  Women's winner Gisela Boelhouwer was closest to average, with a 52 second improvement.  Mark Zerbe was Mr. Consistent, only two seconds slower and edging out Scott Benjamin for the honor by just one second.

Marathon Season

It's the Fall Marathon Season now.  It's all too much to keep track of, so we've created a new Roxbury Marathon Page. Of course, there is no actual "Roxbury Marathon" (yet), but we can have Roxbury Marathon results anyway, because we're so virtual.  Send data, and we will improve it.

There is more about Pike's Peak Marathon on another page.

Rookie of the Year and Most Improved

Forms for making nominations on-line are now available by clicking here.  Each year, we give an award for the Most Improved Runner and to the Rookie of the Year.  It's not too early to think about candidates.  If you want to compare people's performances to last year, you can follow the link to the 2002 page at the bottom of the main Roxbury Page.  You can also use that to see if your candidate ran much last year and find out if he/she is a rookie.

Our definition of "rookie" is a little fuzzy.  Basically, a rookie is someone who didn't run "much" last year.  If the person didn't run enough to be a rookie last year, then he/she's a rookie this year.  This makes Lou Denaro a rookie, with one race last year.  So are Mark Losacco, Mario Hasz and Marge Demarrais, but not Tom McNulty or Mark Andrejczyk.

Pictures

Up top, we have Ed Moros, 13th this week, and second in the "Ed's Division."  In the middle, we have a shot of Chris Powderly and Nora Hulton chatting before a race a few weeks ago, with Charlie Yagielski in the background.  After that we have Mario Hasz motoring towards the finish line.  Lower down, we have a picture of Charlie Yagielski, with a sunbeam on him because he was special.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
