3.7 miles - Ranney Hill Rd October 18, 2003 8:30 am, 37 degrees, foggy |
|
After eight years, we are back on the Ranney Hill Road course. (We may have run the course in 1996, but Web Guy can't find his 1996 results. The best he can do is 1995. He'll keep looking.) Most people had forgotten how to run this devilishly difficult course, and so we were all surprised how steep the bottom of the hill was, as well as how long the top was.
In the end, the hill didn't matter. Mike Abraham, inspired by his team's stunning victory at the South West Conference Championships, took off at the start and disappeared into the fog to win by over a minute. Lou Denaro and the Fossil made runs for second place, but Mark Andrejczyk was too fast for them today.
Among the women, things were a bit closer, as Nora Hulton, lean and fast after recovering from her recent marathon, beat last week's winner Gisela Boelhouwer by a little less than half a minute.
Old Times
People with long memories might want to check out this site. If you can't find what you're supposed to be looking for, here's a hint: Search for "Ken" in the ultra distance records. Not Ken Young.
Somebody else around here used to be fast.
Marathons
The
Fall Marathon season is at its peak. Web Guy decided to put all the
Roxbury times in one place, so you can find them either by clicking on the
Marathon button on the main Roxbury page, or by
following
this link. If you've done marathons not on
the list, please email WebGuy at esandifer@earthlink.net.
We know that lots of times and marathons are missing. Let's try to make it
more or less complete.
This Week vs Last Time
At the
bottom of the page, we have results from the last time we ran this course (as
far as we know.) Five people ran the race both times, and most of them are
older and slower now.
Bob
Satterlee, though, isn't getting older; he's getting better.
Rookie of the Year and Most Improved
Forms for making nominations on-line are now available by clicking here. Each year, we give an award for the Most Improved Runner and to the Rookie of the Year. It's not too early to think about candidates. If you want to compare people's performances to last year, you can follow the link to the 2002 page at the bottom of the main Roxbury Page. You can also use that to see if your candidate ran much last year and find out if he/she is a rookie.
Our definition of "rookie" is a little fuzzy. Basically, a rookie is someone who didn't run "much" last year. If the person didn't run enough to be a rookie last year, then he/she's a rookie this year. This makes Lou Denaro a rookie, with one race last year. So are Mark Losacco, Mario Hasz and Marge Demarrais, but not Tom McNulty or Mark Andrejczyk.
We already have a number of nominations. For most improved: Ken Merrick, Bob Lewis, Katie Neils, Mark Andrejczyk, Bill Gillen, Paul Teixeira. For rookie, Lou Denaro, Mario Hasz and Mark Losacco. If you have more ideas, use the nomination form above, or talk to Bob Lewis or to WebGuy himself.
Pictures
Up top, we have Ed Moros, 13th this week, and second in the "Ed's Division." In the middle, we have a shot of Chris Powderly and Nora Hulton chatting before a race a few weeks ago, with Charlie Yagielski in the background. After that we have Mario Hasz motoring towards the finish line. Lower down, we have a picture of Charlie Yagielski, with a sunbeam on him because he was special.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
