Peg is Back; Ken Wins for Men

Peg Molina is back in Roxbury for the first time since August, but she came back a winner.  She edged last week's winner, Nora Hulton, but just 29 seconds.

Ken Merrick enjoyed a wire-to-wire win in the Men's race, his 14th win of the season and his second in a row.  For second place, it seemed like Ken Moffet was closing the gap on Steve Benoit, in a battle of 51-year olds, but the gap survived, and Steve held on for a 15 second win.  Last week, it was the other way around as Ken beat Steve by five seconds and two places.

Conditions were a bit late-autumn, bright sunshine, but temperatures in the 30's and a mean wind from the direction of Calgary.  Most people brought out the winter gear, though a few brave (or is it foolish) souls ran in shorts.  We didn't see any short sleeves, though, and almost everyone had hats and gloves, with the conspicuous exception of a few shivering souls who though their long hair would keep their ears warm.

New Milford in New Englands

Best of luck to the New Milford Boys Cross Country Team, running in the New England Championships this weekend.  That's why Mike Abraham missed the race this week (and lost his lead in the prestigious Roxbury Points Race.) Of course, talent is even better than luck, and we know they've got talent.

Local News in Roxbury

Last week, we published this nice picture of all the Roxbury runners at the race.  Most of them were missing this week, and that makes a bit of a story.  On the left, we see Gisela Boelhouwer, whom we will miss a great deal when she moves to Calgary when the Roxbury season ends.

Mo van Moffaert teaches physical education in the Roxbury schools.  Every fall, the State of Connecticut requires that she have her fourth-graders run a mile.  She has set out a course on the lower athletic fields behind Booth Free School, and she usually invites a Roxbury runner or two to chaperone the kids and try to convince them that they shouldn't start quite so fast.  The Fossil has done it the last couple of years, and is to be joined by cub photographer Ron Karl this year.  Unfortunately, the event has been rained out each of the last two weeks, and is now scheduled for this coming Wednesday.

Nest comes Chris Childs, sometime member of the Roxbury Recreation Committee, sponsors of our wonderful event.  Then Mike Abraham, who missed this week so he could take the New Milford Boys to the New England Championships.

On the far right is Drew Firmender, who ran such a good race last week, but this week returned to his normal life as a Shepaug High School student.

Pictures

All of our new pictures this week were taken by Ron Karl, who carried a camera while he ran the race and took some great action shorts.  At the top is Lou Denaro, with Mark Andrejczyk and three tiny spots chasing him.  Ron also shot the one with Christina Clark and Corinne Bellemare going past the bar, and the one of Bruce Goulart.  He also admits to shooting the Fossil.  We put that picture way at the bottom of the page.

Among the pictures from last week we have the first and second finishers in the Over 50 group, Steve Benoit and Ken Moffitt. Last week, Ken beat Steve, but this week it came out the other way around. Farther down we have the shot of the five Roxbury residents who ran last week's race.

We also have the picture of the waterfall, maybe the best picture Web Guy ever took.
