Roxbury
Rookies Cathy Kost and David Hunt (11/29/03: oops. Web guy
isn't always that alert. He should have realized that this "David
Hunt" is the same "Dave Hunt" who ran three races earlier in the
season.) swept the winners' circle this week.
Cathy had never run a Roxbury Race before, but David has quite a few of them on
his shoes. Lately, though, he's been too
busy
running for the New Milford High School team, helping them to their New England
Championship last week, so he hasn't been running Roxbury very
often.
Today's race was a real battle. Dangerous Ken Merrick and Dave Hunt turned on to West Apple Lane together, half a mile from the finish. Ken took the lead, thinking that if Dave was going to win, at least he'd make him work for it. David Hunt, though, is in great shape, coming off the fall cross country season, and young legs usually win when it comes to a battle of speed, so The Kid scratched out a three second victory. Congratulations.
A little farther back, David Hunt's coach, Mike Abraham finished third, about forty seconds behind where the action was.
Among the women, Cathy
Kost edged Nora Hulton by just ten seconds, in one of the closest women's
finishes of the season.

Race entries as prizes
Well known race organizer Marty Schiavone ran his first ever Roxbury Road Race this week. He brought as a prize a free entry to an upcoming cross country race in Trumbull. The prize was awarded to the person who finished in the very middle of this week's field, and this time that was Mario Hasz, who finished 21st out of 42 finishers. Congratulations, Mario, and thanks, Marty. How do you like our hills?
Farewell to Gisela
Roxbury Regular and Roxbury regular Gisela Boelhouwer was recognized before the race so we could say good bye to her before she moves to Canada this winter. Who would move to Canada in the winter. Gisela, it's COLD up there! We wish you all the very best, and we'll miss you.
This week vs last week
Twenty
three people ran this course both this week and last. On the average,
people were 25 seconds
faster
this week than last. Experience counts. Sinead Blevio and Christina
Clark let the ranks of the most improved, running 3:11 and 2:26 faster this week
than last. Chris Childs and Tom McNulty share the Consistency award,
running exactly the same time both weeks. A complete table of the combined
results is at the bottom of this page.
Fossil and Mo run the Fourth Graders
Fossil was in Roxbury on Wednesday running with Mo van Moffaert's fourth graders. The State of Connecticut tests kids a lot, and one of the tests is a Mile Run for fourth graders. Mo set out a five lap course on the lower fields behind Booth Free School, but two weeks of rain changed that into a swamp. Plan B was a thirteen lap course on the upper fields.
Pictures
Up top, we have Corinne Bellemare chasing Christina Clark down the hill past the Squires' barn. Below and to the right of that, we have the Fossil running with some of Mo van Moffaert's fourth graders earlier this week. A little farther down is Gisela Boelhouwer, about to move to Calgary, at the starting line today.
A
little farther down, we have the girls in Mo van Moffaert's fourth grade gym
class getting ready to run their mile. Farther down is the picture of the waterfall, maybe the best picture Web Guy ever
took.
Then way down at the bottom is a picture of the Fossil that Ron Karl took when
he carried a camera during last week's race.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
