2003 Roxbury Race #41

4.15 Miles - Hemlock-Ranney

November 29, 2003

8:30 am, 40 degrees - Partly cloudy, very windy

Ken and Cathy

Ken Merrick won his 16th race of the season, and Cathy Kost won her second in just two tries as the 27th season of Roxbury Road Race Series moves closer to its conclusion.  Ken yet another battle with arch-rival Mike Abraham, but, as usual, Abe came out second best, this time by just a dozen seconds.  Ken must have had a fairly easy time of it, as his time was exactly one minute slower than his winning time from last week.

Meanwhile, among the women, Nora Hulton caught Cathy Kost at the three mile mark, as they turned in to the wind along Rt. 67, but the little hill up past the monument was enough to shake her loose again, and Cathy cruised away to win by 22 seconds.  Kost, a former soccer star for Western Connecticut State University, was running only her second Roxbury race.

Votes For Rookie of the Year and Most Improved

Results from the vote for the awards will be announced at next week's Season Finale. There will be awards for the top three point scorers among both men and women, as well, as some other special awards.

This week vs last week

Twenty-two people ran this course both last week and this.  Though 14 people were slower this week and only 8 people were faster, Dave DeBoy was more than 15 minutes faster this week, so the average improvement was 42 seconds.  Mo van Moffaert wins the consistency award this time, running two seconds faster this week than last week.  Ken Moffitt wins the Mr. Average award, improving by the average, 42 seconds. Complete statistics are below the race results at the bottom of the page.

Mark Losacco returns

During his two months in the Boston area, Mark Losacco watched himself plummet from fourth place in the Roxbury Road Race Points standings clear to eighth place.  The pressure was too much on him, so he called off his move to Boston and came back to run Roxbury.  It was too late, though, and he got pummeled by Mark Zerbe two weeks in a row and fell to ninth place, third in the "Mark's" division.

Speaking of Mark's, we haven't heard from Mark Chantry lately.

Pictures

Up top, we have Corinne Bellemare chasing Christina Clark down the hill past the Squires' barn.  Below and to the right of that, we have the Fossil running with some of Mo van Moffaert's fourth graders earlier this month.

A little farther down, we have the girls in Mo van Moffaert's fourth grade gym class getting ready to run their mile.  Farther down is the picture of the waterfall, maybe the best picture Web Guy ever took. Then way down at the bottom is a picture of the Fossil that Ron Karl took when he carried a camera during last week's race.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
