Roxbury Road Race Series Awards $500 In Grants

ROXBURY – The Roxbury Road Race Series has, collectively, awarded $500 in grants to the athletic programs at three area high schools.

The runners, who participate in about 40 races between February and December, have given $250 to New Milford High School toward purchasing plaques for members of its 2003 boys’ cross country team, which won the New England championship.

Additionally, the series is awarding $125 each to Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury and to Brookfield High School to purchase equipment for their cross country and track & field programs.

The money was raised through contributions by the runners and area businesses as part of an annual campaign, which began in 1996, to purchase T-shirts for the series and assist area high school runners.

The past four years the series has annually awarded, collectively, up to $500 in scholarships for seniors at area high schools to help defray some of their college costs.

The series is awarding the grants for the first time. They will be presented to each of the schools Saturday, May 1, around 9:20 a.m. under the pavilion at the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane. The presentations will be part of the awards ceremony following the 14th annual MidSpring Challenge race, which will start at 8:30 a.m.

There will be a $5 entry fee for runners at that event, which will be over a 4.3-mile course.
