A record 132 runners finished the 2004 edition of the five kilometer Roxbury
Thanksgiving Day Race for the Cure. Conditions looked rainy, but the
night's rain had ended and temperatures were mild, as Woodbury's Morgan Robinson
won for the women, 9th over all, in a stellar 18:22. Though she led the
whole way, it was by no means an easy race, with Sarah Sladen just three places
back in 12th, and Katie Kellogg just three places behind that. In the end,
seven of the top 25 places went to women.
New Fairfield's Geoff Nelson had a bit of an easier time of it, besting Roxbury resident Mike Abraham by over a minute to win in 16:48.
The race, and its associated 0.7 mile kids' race and 2.8 mile walk, earned $986 for the New Milford Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the Relay for Life/American Cancer Society
Winthrops
It is notable the number of families and relatives who run the Thanksgiving race. A perusal of the results shows several Hunts, Dwyers, Lyons, Groves, Diehls, Dawes, Robinsons and Groves. Roxbury's own Winthrops, Brian, Mariella, Ian, Jeffrey and Veronica, though, turned out in the largest force, with Ian leading the family and taking third place honors over all.
Pictures
At the top, the start of last year's kids' race, in sunnier, but cooler weather. Below that, an informal shot of New Milford's New England Champions Boys' Cross Country Team, just before they began a Saturday morning workout last month.
Marathons
The First Ever Roxbury Marathon will be on Saturday, December 11 at 8:30. It will start from the Hurlburt Recreation Area on West Apple Lane. It will go out South Street to Judd's Bridge Road, to the bridge, then back past the starting line. This 8.2 mile loop will be followed by five 3.55 mile loops down Hemlock and back Rt. 67. Four person relay teams will be welcome. The entry fee is $5.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
