2004 Roxbury Race #4

2.4 miles - up Chalybes
March 3, 2004

8:30 am.  30 degrees.  sun, wind.

Merrick, DeMarrais Lead Record Field

A record 62 runners showed up for the fourth race of the 2004 Roxbury series.  It was a cool, windy Saturday morning to scamper around the 2.4 mile  course up Chalybes Road.

The lads from New Milford were out in force, with current runners and recent alumni snagging six of the top ten positions.  Like last week, though,  Dangerous Ken Merrick hunted down his young quarry to bag another win.

Among the women, former Princeton University star Marge DeMarrais ran away with the honors, just over a minute ahead of Katy Kellogg.  DeMarrais and Merrick became the season's first two-time winners.

Familiar Faces

A number of familiar faces returned to Roxbury this week, people we used to see a lot, but who lately have been otherwise occupied on Saturday mornings.  It was good to see Harry Ong and Don Smith again.  Don finished a very respectable 18th place.  Also, Bill Gillen and John Murphy Jr both made it for the first time this season.  Welcome back to all.

 Helping the finish line crew

The field of 62 runners breaks the record of 60 set two seasons ago.  With so many runners, managing the finish line is getting more and more hectic.  This week, ten people finished in just 51 seconds from 18:06 to 18:57.  That's more than one every six seconds.

There are a few things you can do to make their tasks easier.  Please be sure you sign up for the race beforehand.  This is how we know how to spell your name for the results.  Also, please make sure you put your age there, too.  When things get confusing, that's one of the things we use to untangle them.  Finally, please make sure you take the time to turn in your stick and get your name recorded.  It only takes a few seconds, but accurate results make the race better for everyone.

Finally, smile at the folks doing the finish line, and thank them every single week.  We appreciate them every week, and we should remind them.
