3.55
miles - Down Hemlock
8:30 am. 39 degrees, cloudy, not quite raining |
|
Points leader Ken Merrick and New Fairfielder (not New
Milford, as we first thought) Katie Kellogg
overcame a cool and not-quite-raining day to win this week's 3.55 mile Roxbury
Road Race. For Kellogg, it was her first
ever win at Roxbury, but for Ken, it was his third of the year. We've lost
track of his lifetime wins, but guess it is in the 30's by now.
The high school stars who have made the first six weeks of the season so exciting have disappeared for a couple of months for the Spring Track season, but a number of other talented runners showed up to try to give Ken a race. Three of the top seven, Dave Dunleavy, John Richers and Roxbury's own Chris Brigham were running their first Roxbury of the season.
It was an exciting race, as a large pack of about ten runners reached the mile mark all together. The pace did something to grind down the pack, but even so, Dave Harvey in sixth place finished only 43 seconds behind winner Ken Merrick.
The race among the women was rather exciting as well, as Pam Quist finished just three places behind division winner Katie Kellogg, though the time gap was 1:18. Third and fourth place finishers Laura Hermann and Peg Molina finished just two places behind Quist.
Two
Capital Letters
During the weekly process of doing the results, we had to figure out if the blank space we had in place #9 on the results sheet belonged to Mark LoSacco. (It did). We noticed that Mark finished first in the "People with two capital letters in their last names." Other finishers in this new division are Tom McNulty, Dave DeBoy and Mo Van Moffaert. We disqualified John Murphy Jr from this division because we decided that "Jr" isn't part of his last name, and also disqualified a large number of people who write in all capital letters.
Fossil of Doom
It's bad luck to run in front of the Fossil during a race. Early in today's race, Dave DeBoy had to stop and walk immediately after he caught the Fossil. In the middle of the race, Jay Kuenzle had to stop and tie his shoe (a task made even harder because he'd forgotten his gloves and his fingers were cold) just as the Fossil caught him. Soon after that, Fossil started getting close to Charlie Greystone, and he suddenly had to slow down because of his hamstrings. For your own safety, the Fossil recommends that you run behind him, not in front of him, during Roxbury races.
76 Degrees
Roxbury resident and 13th place finisher Jay Kuenzle is an airline pilot. He gets to run all over the country. Last week, he was running in Fort Meyers, Florida, when it was 76 degrees. Today's temperatures were almost exactly half that, so it was a bit of a shock for him when he forgot his gloves and his hands froze.
Jay wasn't the only one who got fooled by the weather. Though some people were comfortable running in shorts, a number of them admitted their errors, and still more tried to sneak quickly back to their cars after the race looking for more clothes. Those of us who dressed for the weather were polite, though, and we didn't make fun of them.
Pictures
Up top we have Jay Kuenzle trying to keep his hands warm. Below that we see Bob Satterlee at the finish two weeks ago, stopping his watch, and Dave Harvey in the background. After that, we have a small picture of Mark LoSacco, wearing gloves. A little farther down is a legendary Slovenian castle, notched in to the side of a cliff, once the home of Erasmus, the legendary Robber Barron. Below that is one of the few real dangers of traveling to Slovenia: There are dragons. This one is perched on a bridge near the center of town.
