Ken Merrick was supposed to be resting for Boston.
He's running his first Boston Marathon on Monday, and, if the weather
cooperates, hopes to break three hours.
He
should be resting at Roxbury, just two days before the race. Instead, he's
winning the race with a time faster than anything he's ever run before this
season. The kid is looking good. We hope he runs a bit more
cautiously on Monday.
Among the women, Marge DeMarrais won comfortably, but it was tight for second place. At the mile mark, it was Lynn Zuback and Sinead Blevio, with Nora Hulton about five seconds back. They stayed close for the whole race, but Sinead caught Lynn and finished 12 seconds ahead, and Nora drifted to finish 12 seconds behind Lynn. Good race.
It was a little bit surprising that we had the best weather yet this season, but attendance was down to 41, the second smallest field of the season. We were missing a couple of regulars. Were the rest relaxing before the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Boston Marathon
At least four Roxbury Regulars will join 25,000 of their closest friends this Monday for the Boston Marathon. Among them, Ken Merrick, Ken Moffitt and Kyle Gancher, are the ones whose names begin with K. The exception is Ed Sandifer, whose name has no K in it at all. For Ken Merrick, it will be his first Boston. It will be Ken Moffitt's second. His first was back in 1986. For Kyle, it is five or six times. Among the four of them, they have about 40 Boston Marathons.
Roxbury Grants
The Grant Committee has announced three grants totaling of
$500 to Track and Field programs and Cross Country
programs
at New Milford, Nonnewaug and Brookfield High Schools. Money for the
grants comes from the generous contributions of the people who run the Roxbury
Races. Voluntary contributions from people who run the race, support from
the Roxbury Recreation Committee, some area sponsors, and a loyal cadre of
volunteers more than pay for the actual expenses of organizing the race,
including the t-shirts, portable toilets and occasional one-time expenses like
the printer stopwatch. The rest of the money has been going to scholarships for
area athletes. This year, though, in the face of tightening school budgets
everywhere, it was decided that the Roxbury Grants could help more people if
they helped support school programs rather than individuals. Follow this link
to the official announcement.
Pictures
Up top we have George Hermann at the finish line
today. He's relatively new to Roxbury, but he hasn't missed a race yet
this year. Below George we have Sinead Blevio and Jeff Fields before the
race.
Then
we have a picture of Ken Moffitt behind Mario Hasz. Ken will be running
his second Boston Marathon on Monday. We like that nice rock wall in the
background, across West Apple Lane from the Recreation Area. It really is
pretty, isn't it? Below that, we have Roxbury's own Christina Clark,
reaching for the stick at the finish line today. Way down at the bottom,
we have two of the Fossil's pictures from Slovenia.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
