2004 Roxbury Race #20

2.4 miles - up Chalybes

Merrick & Krebs Episode 2

For the second consecutive week Ken Merrick and Theresa Krebs crossed the line first in Roxbury.  Despite race organizer's best efforts to mix things up this week by running the course in the reverse direction, the pair proved strong enough to hold off this week's challengers.

The men's race got off to an interesting start as the lead pack of Merrick, Andrejczyk, Abraham, Gillen, and Denaro held together through the first 1.5 miles.  As it inevitably does, however, the steep climb up Chalybes thinned the pack, and in the end Merrick was too strong over the last mile for the rest.  He crossed the line in 14:03, 5 seconds ahead of second place finisher Mark Andrejczyk.  This is Ken's 9th win of the season.

Pam Quist was on hand today to make the women's race equally close.   Theresa Krebs was able to hold Pam off and cross the line in 16:33, with a 14 second edge.  This is Theresa's third consecutive win and her 6th total.  Full results below.

All good sequels come in threes.  Will there be a Merrick & Krebs Episode 3?  Tune in next week - or better yet, show up and race!

Up top we have most of the women's point leaders taking some cooldown laps on the track.   At right, we have Charles Euston finishing up strong.  Even farther down, we have Bob Satterlee hitting his watch at the finish with Dave Harvey getting the official time. Prasama is shown about mid-way through her Roxbury mile, and all the way at the bottom is Fossil's Slovenian dragon.  We don't often see dragons in Roxbury.  There are no dragons (or snakes) in Ireland

Marathons

Response to the idea of a December Marathon has been positive.  Scott Benjamin has offered to take the lead in getting it organized.  Nothing is firm yet.  If you have ideas, talk to Scott, or talk to Fossil, or eMail Web Guy (address above)  We'll remind you of the issues.

  1. When?  Second week in December has been suggested.  Someone else suggested just telling people it's 2.4 miles, then surprising everyone.
  2. Course - We're gradually converging on the idea of a longer loop, six to eight miles, at the beginning, followed several shorter loops, probably 3.55 miles.  This would make it so we could have LOTS of water stops with just a few volunteers.  However, the numbers don't work out to use the usual 6.4 mile Falls Road loop.  Any suggestions for a fairly un-Alp-like opening loop?
  3. Relays?  Some people like to do Marathon Relays.  Would we want to include that, too?  How about a half-marathon at the same time?   (Answer: People seem to think we should include a marathon relay.)
  4. Who?  Who wants to take charge of all this? (Answer:  Scott Benjamin, plus whoever wants to help)
