7.3 miles - Jeep trail - Hemlock August 21, 2004 8:30 am. - 70 degrees - still wet from a hard rain |
|

Twenty different people have won at Roxbury this season. Only two of them have won ten times, and they both grabbed their tenth victories on the same day. They won differently.
Andrea started out in a group of three, in 7th, 8th and 9th place. That group broke up after about three miles, leaving her in the middle, and she finished in 8th place, twenty seconds out of 7th and three minutes out of 9th.
Ken Merrick started in a group of six, well behind last week's winner, Mark Andrejczyk. As the group broke up, he found himself in a battle on the Jeep trail with recent Springfield College graduate Pete Gillen.
The day couldn't have been muggier. The rains stopped during registration, but the roads were wet and a tree had fallen across the course near the five-mile mark. Surprisingly, the Jeep trail was not a white-water experience. Given the weather, that surprised everyone.
The course was a little long today, and the weather wasn't all that great, so lots of people ran alternate courses.
The runs, which start and finish near the Everett Hurlbut Community Park on West Apple Lane, are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission.
Pictures
Up top we have a shot of Theresa Krebs from the MidSummer Championship race. Farther down, Charlie Euston earlier in the season. Way down at the bottom, the Dragon is back. That's because, by the end of race today, we were all "dragon." ("Dragon" "dragging" - get it? Sorry.)
