2004 Roxbury Race #28

Up Chalybes

September 11, 2004

8:30 am. - 70 degrees - sunny and breezy

Huge field - Familiar winners

A record 62 runners came to Roxbury on a glorious early autumn morning for the 3.55 mile race up Hemlock.  It was hotly contested.  Mark Andrejczyk went out fast, but after about a mile, Ken Merrick and Jeff Sheldon passed him.   In the end, Jeff faded a bit.  Mark finished just eight seconds behind twelve time winner Ken Merrick, and Jeff finished 24 seconds behind that, with a hard-charging Mark LoSacco just six seconds off his heels.

Among the women, it was a titanic battle between Theresa Krebs and Marge DeMarrais, but with a mile to go, Marge pulled up lame and couldn't finish the race.  Andrea Behling was right behind.

In the expert opinion of the old-timers at the race, the field of 62 ties the all time attendance record for a Roxbury race.  The crowd was energized by two vans full of runners from The Gunnery School in Washington Depot.  For many years, the Gunnery made an annual pilgrimage to Roxbury, but they haven't been able to make it for the last four or five years.  Now, though, they have bright new red vans, and we hope they'll be back.

It was good to see Jean Bartkus, an occasional Roxbury runner for several years now, running with her ten year old daughter Tarryn.  Those of us lucky enough to see Tarryn during the race will agree that she shows promise, ran a fine race, and had a titanic finish.  Welcome to the races, Tarryn!

The runs, which start and finish near the Everett Hurlbut Community Park on West Apple Lane, are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission.

Pictures

Up top we have a shot of this week's winner Andrea Behling from the MidSummer Championship race.  To the right, George Hermann, wearing his lucky red headband.   Then Harry Ong getting close to the finish line.  Below that, Rapid Lynn Zuback gives us a big wave. Way down at the bottom, the Dragon is back.

Upcoming Races
Monroe Madness Road Race Series - 3.1 miles - Sun September 12 - The Monroe Road Race Series is organized by Roxbury regular Mark Andrejczyk.

The NEXT Monroe Madness Race will be October 10.

Marathons

Update: The latest idea is to run the marathon on the Saturday after the regular series ends.  That would be Saturday, December 11, just three months from now.

Scott Benjamin has taken the lead in getting it organized.  If you have ideas, talk to Scott, or talk to Fossil, or eMail Web Guy (esandifer@earthlink.net )  We'll remind you of the issues.

  1. When?  Saturday, December 11
  2. Course - We're considering 8.4 miles down to Judd's Bridge and back, followed by five 3.55 mile loops.    This would make it so we could have LOTS of water stops with just a few volunteers.
  3. Relays?  People seem to think we should include a marathon relay.
  4. Who?  Scott Benjamin is Race Director, and many people are already volunteering.  When you volunteer, be sure to tell him what you are willing to do to help.  He'll try to keep a list.
  5. If we want to use this to qualify for Boston or anything, there are some hoops necessary, like getting the course certified and sanctioned.  Anyone willing to do that work?

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
