Dennen & Quist Emerge From the Fog Victorious

A large field of 46 runners turned out despite the chilly temperatures and a sky that threatened rain to take on the out-and-back 4.3 mile High Bridge Rd course.  The field included Roxbury '04 rookie Pat Dennen who went out fast, never let up, and ran away with the race in his debut with a time of 23:54.  We kept waiting for him to get tired...  Second and third place finishers Mark Andrejczyk and Ken Moffit had a little battle going.  Ken lead for most of the race, but Mark outpaced him with just about a mile to go.  In another close battle, Pam Quist took home her second win of the season.  Pam finished the course in 31:56 with Andrea Behling trailing by just 17 seconds.

The battles were not limited to two-legged competitors.  In an alternate course race of 1.05 miles Betsy Daniels' friends Oliver and Rupert made it a close one.  In the end the older and wiser Oliver managed to nose out young upstart Rupert by half a whisker.  Almost too close to call.

The runs, which start and finish near the Everett Hurlbut Community Park on West Apple Lane, are sponsored by the Roxbury Recreation Commission.

Timing

Despite WebGuy Sr's claim last week that we would find a new way to mess up this week,  (see last week's timer paper fiasco), the race results are guaranteed to be 99.95% accurate.  If your time falls within that 0.05% consider yourself lucky and email the correction to WebGuy Jr at marksl2@earthlink.net.

Upcoming Marathons

Mario Hasz is running the Hartford Marathon next week.  It will be his first, though he has already run farther in a training run!  Mario will need to write us a nice report about the experience so we can share it on the site.

  Other upcoming marathoners include:

bullet

Albany: Ed Sandifer

bullet

New York: John Adomelis, Ken Moffitt and Mark LoSacco

For Ken it will be his 66th marathon, and his first New York.  Email us if you are running one too.

Don't forget about the Roxbury Marathon.  How else can you be motivated to run the down Hemlock loop 5 times in one day?  We need volunteers to help out for the race which is to be held Dec. 11th.  Let Bob Lewis or Scott Benjamin know if you can help out.

Pictures

Up top, we have this week's winner Pam Quist.  The photo was taken during the 2001 season.  Below Pam, we have marathoner Mario Hasz finishing strong in a race last year.  Down below we have Terry Lyons and women's points leader Lynn Zuback in the parking lot in front of the cars of the people watching the soccer game.  Below that is a shot of Peg Molina, Mike Abraham and Bob Lewis.

Way down at the bottom, the Dragon remains.  At this point WebGuy Jr. is afraid to get rid of him.

Upcoming Races
Monroe Madness Road Race Series - 2.6 miles - Sun October 10 - The Monroe Road Race Series is organized by Roxbury regular Mark Andrejczyk.

Marathons

Scott Benjamin has taken the lead in getting it organized.  If you have ideas, talk to Scott, or talk to Fossil, or eMail Web Guy (esandifer@earthlink.net )  We'll remind you of the issues.

  1. When?  Saturday, December 11
  2. Course - We're considering 8.4 miles down to Judd's Bridge and back, followed by five 3.55 mile loops (Down Hemlock).    This would make it so we could have LOTS of water stops with just a few volunteers.
  3. Relays?  People seem to think we should include a marathon relay.
  4. Who?  Scott Benjamin is Race Director, and many people are already volunteering.  When you volunteer, be sure to tell him what you are willing to do to help.  He'll try to keep a list.
  5. If we want to use this to qualify for Boston or anything, there are some hoops necessary, like getting the course certified and sanctioned.  Anyone willing to do that work?

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
