DePalma & Krebs Take Fall Honors

Mark DePalma showed up for his first Roxbury race this year and lead the charge up the Jeep Trail and across the line with a time of 23:04 (5:50 pace).  Mark sat back early on while Jeff Sheldon and '04 Roxbury Rookie Edival Dos Santos took the lead early.  Edival was wearing funky space-age shoes consisting of a sole and a few straps that actually went through holes in his socks.  Luckily the Jeep Trail was not muddy or navigating the steep leaf-strewn rocky trail would have been more of a challenge for him.

By mile one Jeff and Edival had a 15 second lead over a five-man pack of Mark Andrejczyk, Mike Abraham, Mark DePalma, Ken Merrick and Dave Harvey.  DePalma starting working his way up to the leaders and was running with them by the two mile mark.  Meanwhile Ken Merrick  began his patented come-from-behind strategy and started closing on the three leaders along the rolling hills of River road.  By the time they reached the Jeep Trail the order was DePalma, Dos Santos, Merrick and Andrejczyk.  Merrick and Andrejczyk passed Dos Santos, but DePalma's lead was too much for Merrick to overcome.

Theresa Krebs was the fastest woman, covering the course in an uncontested time of 27:52 (7:03 pace).  For Theresa winning Roxbury is nothing new.  This was her 16th win of the season.  That ties her with Ken Merrick for the most wins this year.

Special thanks to Mark Andrejczyk for his account of the race.

Pictures

Special thanks to Ron Karl for providing some new picture this week.  Up top, George and Laura Hermann along with Mo Van Moffaert.  Below Tom McNulty and others wait for the award ceremony.  Way at the bottom, Old Web Guy getting eaten by a German Dragon.  This just reinforces Web Guy Jr.'s fear of Dragons.

Marathons

Scott Benjamin has taken the lead in getting it organized.  If you have ideas, talk to Scott, or talk to Fossil, or eMail Web Guy (esandifer@earthlink.net )  We'll remind you of the issues.

  1. When?  Saturday, December 11
  2. Course - 8.4 miles down to Judd's Bridge and back, followed by five 3.55 mile loops (Down Hemlock).    This makes it so we can have LOTS of water stops with just a few volunteers.
  3. Relays?  People seem to think we should include a marathon relay.  How does this sound for a relay - one 4-mile leg down to Judd's bridge, another one back up, two 7.1 mile legs, two laps each, and then one 3.55 mile leg, just one lap?  Tell Scott if you like the idea.
  4. Who?  Scott Benjamin is Race Director, and many people are already volunteering.  When you volunteer, be sure to tell him what you are willing to do to help.  He'll try to keep a list.
  5. If we want to use this to qualify for Boston or anything, there are some hoops necessary, like getting the course certified and sanctioned.  To certify the course, we need to calibrate the bicycle wheels on an accurate three or four mile stretch of road.  Does anyone know where there is a long stretch of smooth state or US highway with those green mile markers on it?  Contact WebGuy at esandifer@earthlink.net if you know such a stretch of road.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
