A year ago, the last race of the season was postponed a week because of a nasty
snow storm. This year, it was plenty cold, low to mid 20's, but the skies
were clear, the times were fast, and the results were familiar.
Ken Merrick and Theresa Krebs each won their 18th races of the 41 race season. Ken ran a dominating 13:35, one of the fastest times of the season against one of the strongest fields of the season. Meanwhile, Theresa Krebs finished 16th overall in 16:46.
As a measure of how strong this week's field was, we note that last week, five people finished in under 15:00, but this week, that time earned Mike Abraham only 10th place.
There were some small dramas in the race. The Fossil, Ed Sandifer, entered the race in tenth place, two points ahead of Jeff Tindell, who in turn was two points ahead of Tom McNulty. Tom finished several places behind the other two, but Jeff went out fast and ran one of his hardest efforts of the year to finish three places ahead of the Fossil, just enough to grab tenth place by one point. In the last half mile, Jeff caught Mike Abraham, while Brian Vanderheiden caught the Fossil to turn the tables.
In other news, former Regular Bob
Bouclier returned to Roxbury after an absense of more than five years.
He's older, the father of a 12-year old, and a little slower. To put this
in perspective, when Fossil ran his first Roxbury race in August of 1986, Fossil
(much younger at the time) finished second; Bouck won. Bouck was this
week's only "rookie." It's been a while.
Shiloh Gawe won the battle in the "Other" division over Copper Zarger. Shiloh finished 39th overall in 21:53, a little over four minutes ahead of her rival.
Pictures
At the top, this week's winner Theresa Krebs shows off her Rookie of the Year plaque. Below that, we have this week's winner and Points winner Ken Merrick. Ken ran a 2:59 marathon at Philadelphia a couple of weeks ago. After that, Bob Satterlee trying to push over a post. Farther down we have women's points winner Rapid Lynn Zuback, on a warmer day, smiling and waving. After that, a group of our friends laughing after the race. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Both the Fossil and the Dragon survived the encounter, only slightly the worse for wear.
