Pete Gillen, accomplished runner at New Milford High, Roxbury and Springfield College, recently sent this appeal to participate in an on-line fundraising project. You click, sponsors pay. His letter is below. I checked it out, and an eMail from Oxfam America, attesting its legitimacy, follows.
From
Pete:
Hey Ed,
Coaching Springfield College, teaching 6th grade, and grad
classes up here are wonderful! I have a small favor to ask of the Roxbury
website team. I coordinate with Oxfam America, a national charitable group
for the college. Each year, they sponsor a click drive."
Advertisers create micro-credit loans for the poorest people in India to begin
their own business groups to build themselves up and become part of the economy.
It is not a donation, but a small, very low-interest loan. www.povertyfighters.com
is the website. 2 clicks per day per computer on the site donate twenty
five cents to the program.
Colleges compete to see who can get the advertisers to contribute the most money. Currently SC is in 11th place out of a few hundred colleges. I was hoping you could post the link on the website and encourage people to visit www.povertyfighters.com, select Springfield College (or their school of choice) and help us out. They don't ask for names or e-mail addresses. There is no junk mail or spam and it costs the clicker no money at all. It takes five seconds and we'd love the help. I've coordinated this myself for the past three years and been successful with it. It's a small act that does a lot of good. I hope everyone is well! Keep up the great work and running!

Subject: Oxfam Click Drive
I was recently asked to post a link to http://www.povertyfighters.com/
on my web site. This organization claims to be part of Oxfam America, but
I can find no reference to them on your web sites, nor a report on them on any
of the reputable charity guides.
What's up? Are they legitimate?

Their Reply
Dear Ed,
Thank you for your inquiry about the legitimacy of the Oxfam Click Drive.
The click drive was begun by Ben Brandzel an Oxfam CHANGE leader when he was at
Brandeis. Oxfam has lent its name to the effort but it is totally student
run and the money raised through the clicks goes to Calvert's micro-finance
efforts. It is associated with Oxfam although
not a part of our actual campaigns.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Best wishes,
Liz Lucas
