Up Chalybes February 19, 2005 8:30 am. 12 degrees, clear and sunny |
|
Roxbury is back. Spring must be on the way. You couldn't tell it by
the weather, though. It was sunny and beautiful, but it was about 12
degrees, and if you spent any time outside of your car, you noticed that there
was a sneaky wind out of the north west that cut through clothes after just a
little while.
Still, 54 people re-united after a ten week break and set out on the "up-the-hill" version of the 2.4 mile course on Chalybes Road.
It was hard for lots of people to get started after the winter break, but Pat Viklund and Caroline White showed fewer deleterious effects than the rest of us, and won their respective divisions. Pat had only 14 seconds on Jeff Sheldon, his nearest rival, while Caroline had a gap of just under a minute on Andrea Behling.
Complete results are a little farther down the page. The column "Last Season" tells us the place that people finished last year in the Prestigious Roxbury Points System.
Roxbury the Event
The race was apparently the biggest event of the morning in all of Roxbury, and the folks who market Red Bull knew it. They sent one of their top marketing teams in the Red Bull truck to hand out free samples of the product before and after the race. Despite the very cold weather, the cold beverages were popular both before and after the race.
Other events
Red Bull wasn't the only outfit that knew where to find runners on a Saturday morning.
Wally Jahn handed out 2005 Road Race calendars from New England Runner, as well as entry forms for next week's Polar Bear Run at Lake Waramaug. He also announced that the proposed Half Marathon in Bethel is really going to happen, and it will be on April 3.
Ryan McGorty, a senior at Shephaug Valley High School, along with Michael Hall, is organizing an April Fools Day 5k and two mile walk in Washington. Part of the April Fools joke is that the race is April 2, not April Fools Day itself. He handed out a bunch of entry forms.
Rumors Abound that Wayne Blackman, a regular on the Roxbury Injured List, and Dr. Mary Chute will tie the knot the first week in April. Paparazzi take notice!
Pete Gillen eMailed an appeal to participate in an unusual charity drive to support "microloans" in developing countries. You can read our conversation on this. I was skeptical at first, feeling it seemed too good to be true, but I checked with Oxfam America and it checks out just fine. Or you can go straight to the web site at www.povertyfighters.com. The drive ends March 31.
This week vs last year
We ran this same course, though in the opposite direction, as the closing race of the 2004 season. That makes this race an indicator of what people have been doing for the last ten weeks. It's pretty clear that a lot of us have been sitting down a lot. Of the 28 people who ran both races, only five, led by Dennis Harrington, managed to be faster now than then. We were an average of about 35 seconds slower.
The consistency award goes to Women's winner Caroline White, who lost only 3 seconds over the winter. Mario Hasz slowed by 36 seconds, making him the most average of us all.
Complete details are at the bottom of the page.
Pictures
At the top, we have spectator Andy Morehouse's photograph
of the crowd rocketing away from the starting line. Andy complains that it
was too cold for photography, and apologizes for not taking more pictures.
Below that are the folks from Red Bull and their Mobile. Then we have Ryan
McGorty making the announcement of his race. Ryan also worked the stop
watch at the finish line for us. Behind him, you can see, peeking from
under her bundle, Diane Hasz, who bravely handed out sticks at the finish
line.
You
can't wear gloves and hand out sticks.
Below that is a shot of the crowd, listening to Ryan, adjusting their gloves and trying to stay warm, just before the start. Along side the results, we have pictures from warmer times last year, Lynn Zuback in the first shot, Chris Childs, Sharon Gawe, Tom McNulty and half of Ken Moffitt below that. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Both the Fossil and the Dragon survived the encounter, only slightly the worse for wear.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
