In recent years, one of the February races has been snowed out about half the
time. Two years ago we lost a December race, too. This year, we've
made it through February with our calendar intact, but we've had to run two of
the coldest Roxbury races ever. Snow was on the ground, debris from storms
on Monday and Friday, with a dusting from Wednesday.
Last week's second place finishers were both substantially faster this week (see below) and won this week. Conditions were even more adverse this week, but we got to go down the big hill instead of slogging up it.
Jeff Sheldon ran a fast 13:47, nicking Mark LoSacco by just seven seconds. Mark, in turn, was just eight seconds ahead of Peter Lofink. The trio, along with fifth place finisher Ken Merrick, are already over a hundred points in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Race.
Meanwhile, Adrea Behling ticked 48 seconds off her time from last week to beat Pam Quist by 25 seconds. Pam shaved 30 seconds off last week's time, and ran faster this week than Andrea had run last week.
There were 50 finishers this week, all a little crazier after the race than they had been before.
Fossil Qualifies
3:29:34, 8th place over all, 1st over 50 at the Hudson-Mohawk Winter Marathon in Albany. Results will be posted at www.hmrrc.com.
Other events
Wally Jahn reminds us of tomorrow's Polar Bear Run at Lake Waramaug. He has also announced that the proposed Half Marathon in Bethel is really going to happen, and it will be on April 3.
Ryan McGorty, a senior at Shephaug Valley High School, along with Michael Hall, is organizing an April Fools Day 5k and two mile walk in Washington. Part of the April Fools joke is that the race is April 2, not April Fools Day itself. He handed out a bunch of entry forms.
The Rumor is true that Wayne Blackman, a regular on the Roxbury Injured List, and Dr. Mary Chute will tie the knot the first week in April. Paparazzi take notice!
Pete Gillen eMailed an appeal to participate in an unusual charity drive to support "microloans" in developing countries. You can read our conversation on this. I was skeptical at first, feeling it seemed too good to be true, but I checked with Oxfam America and it checks out just fine. Or you can go straight to the web site at www.povertyfighters.com. The drive ends March 31.
This week vs last week
Thirty-one of us ran this same course, though in the opposite direction, as last week. We were much faster this week, with Bob Lewis hacking a solid 2:02 off last week's effort, as he continues to recover from a January appendix operation. The average improvement was 18 seconds, and second-place finisher Mark LoSacco was most average, improving by 17 seconds. Reliable Scott Benjamin is most consistent, running 18:17 both weeks. The Fossil was the major disappointment of the week. Claiming he was resting up for a marathon in Albany the next day, he was 2:20 slower this week.
Complete details are at the bottom of the page.
Pictures
At the top, we have spectator Andy Morehouse's photograph
of the crowd rocketing away from the starting line. Andy complains that it
was too cold for photography, and apologizes for not taking more pictures.
Below that we have a crowd shot before the start. What looks like a
snowball fight erupting in the background is really somebody hurrying to get
over to the line before we say "Go!"
Below
that we have race stalwarts Diane Hasz and Ken Neils. Diane gave the
camera a big wave, but Ken had his hands full of stopwatch and clipboard.
Below that we have last week's crowd, slightly warmer and no snow on the ground, adjusting their gloves and trying to stay warm, just before the start. Along side the results, we have pictures from warmer times last year, Lynn Zuback in the first shot, Chris Childs, Sharon Gawe, Tom McNulty and half of Ken Moffitt below that. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Both the Fossil and the Dragon survived the encounter, only slightly the worse for wear.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
