This week the winners were different, the course was different, but the bitter cold temperatures stayed the same as Mark LoSacco and Theresa Krebs won Race #3. Theresa has a lot of experience winning Roxbury races. Last year she won 18 times. This was her first appearance and first win of this season as she led the women's field with a time of 24:47 over the 3.55 mile course down Hemlock. Caroline White and Andrea Behling were 2nd and 3rd with respective times of 25:22 and 25:48. |

For Mark LoSacco this was his first ever Roxbury win, though he's been a member of the top 10 point standings for the last 2 seasons. He covered the course in 20:55 edging out his navigationally challenged rival Jeff Sheldon (last week's winner). Mark is convinced Jeff's decision to cross and run on the left side of Rt. 67 had a lot to do with the 22 second margin. But Jeff just can't resist an opportunity to be scolded by pickup truck drivers. Peter Lofink finished 3rd and retains his 3rd place position in the overall point standings.
There were 52 finishers this week, all a little crazier after the race than they had been before.
Fossil Qualified
If Ed Sandifer looked a little tired this week he had an excuse. Last Sunday he ran a Boston qualifying marathon time of 3:29:34, 8th place over all, 1st over 50 at the Hudson-Mohawk Winter Marathon in Albany. Results are posted at www.hmrrc.com
Other events
Wally Jahn has announced that the proposed Half Marathon in Bethel is really going to happen, and it will be on April 3.
Ryan McGorty, a senior at Shephaug Valley High School, along with Michael Hall, is organizing an April Fools Day 5k and two mile walk in Washington. Part of the April Fools joke is that the race is April 2, not April Fools Day itself. He handed out a bunch of entry forms.
The Rumor is true that Wayne Blackman, a regular on the Roxbury Injured List, and Dr. Mary Chute will tie the knot the first week in April. Paparazzi take notice!
Pete Gillen eMailed an appeal to participate in an unusual charity drive to support "microloans" in developing countries. You can read our conversation on this. I was skeptical at first, feeling it seemed too good to be true, but I checked with Oxfam America and it checks out just fine. Or you can go straight to the web site at www.povertyfighters.com. The drive ends March 31.
Pictures
At the top, we have photos of this week's winners taken during warmer times last year. The next shot is of race stalwarts Diane Hasz and Ken Neils. Diane gave the camera a big wave, but Ken had his hands full of stopwatch and clipboard. Below we have a crowd shot before the start two weeks back. What looks like a snowball fight erupting in the background is really somebody hurrying to get over to the line before we say "Go!"
Along side the results, we have pictures from warmer times last year, Lynn Zuback in the first shot, Chris Childs, Sharon Gawe, Tom McNulty and half of Ken Moffitt below that. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Both the Fossil and the Dragon survived the encounter, only slightly the worse for wear.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
