Seventy-one people didn't have anything better to do this Saturday morning, so
they all came to Roxbury. It was an even bigger field than last week.
Jeff Sheldon and Caroline White were the fastest ones, each winning their second
race of the year. Caroline had won the first race of the season, and Jeff
won the second one.
Jeff admits to being a little less energized than he was last week, when he had Jeremie to chase, and Jeff's nearest competition, Mark LoSacco, 15 seconds back, might have charged harder if he hadn't seen that Jeff still had lots in reserve.
Places 8 through 13 were all snagged by runners from New Milford High School, tuning up for the upcoming spring track season. Others of them were sprinkled all over the first 20 or so places. They have a well-developed pack instinct. It shows how their cross country team won last year's New England Championship.
College Graduate
Roxbury icon Dennis Harrington has been making good use of his time lately. Last week, after a 30 year odyssey, Dennis finished his college degree through Charter Oak. It's a rare time he beats his son Kevin in a race. Kevin won't finish college until May. It's hard to believe that Dennis has been in college almost as long as the Fossil has been running Boston. Congratulations from all of us, Dennis!
Farther Back
New Milford cross country alumnus Ben Danton, now a freshman at the University of New Hampshire, was spotted several times on the course, but he didn't cross the finish line, so you won't find him in the results.
This week vs last week
The 41 people who ran both last week and this week were, on the average, we were 35 seconds slower this week. The two courses were both 3.7 miles long, but this course, with two hills, is generally regarded as more difficult. Statistics seem to bear that out.
Bob Lewis and Mike Mayer went against the trend and managed to improve by over a minute each, 1:24 and 1:03 respectively. A dozen people, though, were more than a minute slower on this course, lead (or followed) by Tom McNulty, 4:38 slower. Mark LoSacco and Charlie Euston were closest to the :35 second average slow-down, missing by 9 seconds each. Charlie, though was only :26 seconds slower, while Mark was :44 seconds slower. Brian Gildea was the most consistent, slowing by only :02 seconds.
Complete details are at the bottom of the page.
Value Added
It is easy to generate statistics with the sophisticated software we use to create these pages. This week we have a column that compares the place we finished this week (first column) with the place we finished last week (second column). It looks like Brian Clemente made the biggest move up, climbing from 8th last week to 3rd this week.
Anybody seen JT Schemm lately? It might be that he's occupied with the new addition to his family, Elliott Maier Schemm. Bring him to the races, JT! And congratulations.
Other events
Wally
Jahn has announced that the proposed Half
Marathon in Danbury and through Bethel is really going to happen, and it will be
next Sunday.
Ryan McGorty, a senior at Shephaug Valley High School, along with Michael Hall, is organizing an April Fools Day 5k and two mile walk in Washington. Part of the April Fools joke is that the race is April 2, not April Fools Day itself. He handed out a bunch of entry forms. We should be able to get from Roxbury up to the high school in plenty of time to run both races.
The Rumor is true that Wayne Blackman, a regular on the Roxbury Injured List, and Dr. Mary Chute will tie the knot next weekend. Paparazzi take notice!
Pete Gillen eMailed an appeal to participate in an unusual charity drive to support "microloans" in developing countries. You can read our conversation on this. I was skeptical at first, feeling it seemed too good to be true, but I checked with Oxfam America and it checks out just fine. Or you can go straight to the web site at www.povertyfighters.com. The drive ends March 31.
Pictures
At the top, Walt Schuttler, Carl Hunt and Mo van Moffaert warm up before a race last year.
Then a shot from the start a couple of years ago. How many people can you identify there? One of them is Keyless boB. Then, we have Kyle Knight leading Sinead Blevio to the finish line a year ago. Below that, the small but brave field leaves the finish line last week. Who is that wearing shorts, anyway?
Along the side, next to the results, we have Regular Bob Satterlee, giving the quality of writing on the web page a Thumbs Up. Then there's a photo from February, 2004. Then comes George Hermann, and way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Both the Fossil and the Dragon survived the encounter, only slightly the worse for wear.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
