Down Chalybes, up Ranney April 02, 2005 8:30 am. 39 degrees, cold, rainy |

A smaller but hardier group of runners braved the cold wind and rain this week to run the 7th race of the season. Greg Pelican (birds like water) only shows up when the weather is bad. He showed up 3 weeks ago in the snow (see above) and won that race. Greg is the 3rd from the right in the bright yellow cycling jersey. Today he displayed a similar disregard for the elements, winning his 2nd Roxbury and covering the 4.2 mile Hemlock/Ranney Hill course in 25:14 (6:00 pace). Second place finisher Jeff Sheldon pushed the pace early on, leading the way down Hemlock. Greg ran smart, running even with Jeff at the top of Ranney before swooping to the finish with a 21 second lead.
Cindy Scannell and Sinead Blevio had a closer battle amongst the ladies, with Cindy coming out on top this week by 12 seconds with a 33:27 finishing time. This is Cindy's first victory of the season and to her the weather was just fine.
College Graduate
Roxbury icon Dennis Harrington has been making good use of his time lately. Two weeks ago, after a 30 year odyssey, Dennis finished his college degree through Charter Oak. It's a rare time he beats his son Kevin in a race. Kevin won't finish college until May. It's hard to believe that Dennis has been in college almost as long as the Fossil has been running Boston. Congratulations from all of us, Dennis!
Value Added
It is easy to generate statistics with the sophisticated software we use to create these pages. This week we have a column that compares the place we finished this week (first column) with the place we finished last week (second column).
Anybody seen JT Schemm lately? It might be that he's occupied with the new addition to his family, Elliott Maier Schemm. Bring him to the races, JT! And congratulations.
Other events
Wally
Jahn has announced that the proposed Half
Marathon in Danbury and through Bethel is really going to happen, and it will be
TOMORROW!
Pete Gillen eMailed an appeal to participate in an unusual charity drive to support "microloans" in developing countries. You can read our conversation on this. I was skeptical at first, feeling it seemed too good to be true, but I checked with Oxfam America and it checks out just fine. Or you can go straight to the web site at www.povertyfighters.com. The drive ends March 31.
Pictures
At right we have Kyle Knight leading Sinead Blevio to the finish line a year ago.
Along the side, next to the results, we have Regular Bob Satterlee, giving the quality of writing on the web page a Thumbs Up. Then there's a photo from February, 2004. Then comes George Hermann, and way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Both the Fossil and the Dragon survived the encounter, only slightly the worse for wear.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
