Down Chalybes, up Ranney April 9, 2005 8:30 am. 45 degrees, sun, tricky, swirling winds |
|
It was chilly before the race, upper 30's, but by the time 8:30 rolled around,
the parking lot was full, 53 runners toed the line, and the temperature was in
the mid 40's. The wind seemed
to
be coming from the north, but once the race started, it gradually became clear
that the wind was swirling, and every direction was against the wind.
Eventual winner Jeromie Schumacher and points leader Jeff Sheldon started at a fairly sane pace, but on the Hemlock downhill, insanity emerged, and Schumacher began to build a lead that grew to almost a minute.
At the finish line, our gracious winner took over the stopwatch and clipboard and timed the race for a while.
Caroline White also enjoyed a clear margin among the women. Finishing 11th overall, she grabbed her third win of the season and finished about two minutes ahead of rival Pam Quist.
Stick numbers
In the official results, your place number might not match your place in the results. Stick 34 inadvertently went to someone running an alternate course. We straightened that out and moved everyone after that up a place. Times should be correct though.
This week vs Last week
Twenty-six runners, almost exactly half the field, ran this same course in wet conditions a week ago. For the most part, they did better. Average improvement was 33 seconds, and 22 out of 26 people were faster, including both George and Laura Hermann, more than a minute faster. Chris Powderly and Chris Norris led the improvements, 2:42 and 2:40 faster respectively. Walt Schuttler and Sinead Blevio were most conspicuous among those who didn't get faster. David Mariani and Chris Childs were most consistent, 3 and 4 seconds slower this week, and Lee Ann Zarger and Chas Greystone were most average in their improvements, 28 seconds faster this week. Full details are at the bottom of the page.
Value Added
It is easy to generate statistics with the sophisticated software we use to create these pages. This week we have a column that compares the place we finished this week (first column) with the place we finished last week (second column).
Anybody seen JT Schemm lately? It might be that he's occupied with the new addition to his family, Elliott Maier Schemm. Bring him to the races, JT! And congratulations.
Pictures
At the top, after the race Tom Fisher and George Hermann discuss whether to play on the slide, or on the swings. At right we have Kyle Knight leading Sinead Blevio to the finish line a year ago.
Along the side, next to the results, we have Regular Bob Satterlee, giving the quality of writing on the web page a Thumbs Up. Then there's a photo from February, 2004. Then comes Dave Harvey, this week running the race instead of the stopwatch. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil in Germany, six time zones east of here, meeting another dragon. Sadly, the dragon actually bit poor Fossil's head off. They managed to sew it back on, but his beard suffered permanent damage and has been replaced by a wad of copper Brillo.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
