4.3 miles - High Bridge April 30, 2005 8:30 am. 47 degrees, misty rain, overcast |

Another wet Saturday morning, another win for Jeff Sheldon and Caroline White. They've each won 5 races thus far this year, 3 more than any other runner. The High Bridge Rd. course is a tough little out-and-back that no-one seems to enjoy. The first 2 miles are a breeze - mostly downhill and easy to fool yourself into PR dreams. But like on all out and backs that obey the laws of topography, what goes down must eventually come back up. Some runners find that time runs half-speed during mile 4 when the legs get heavy. Next week we get to pay to do this all over again!

Jeff Sheldon led a small group of fast starters (Mike Abraham, Mark LoSacco) through the first mile. By mile 2 the group had spaced out, with Mark overtaking Mike. They would go on to finish in that order, with Jeff holding about a 10 second lead over Mark through to the finish.
The lead women went through mile 1 in a close group. Caroline was able to put a minute between herself and closest rival Eunice Bussom. This was Eunice's first Roxbury appearance of the year. For Caroline the win also moved her into 10th place overall in the points standings.
In other news, Ed Sandifer and Mark Zerbe have quite a rivalry going. Web Guy Jr. overheard Ed giving Mark some advice on how to best handle the hills on the return leg. Mark edged Ed out last week, and Ed was victorious today. This is getting good.
Boston
A number of people we know from Roxbury joined 20,000 of their closest friends two weeks ago for an early-afternoon excursion from Hopkinton to Boston. You can check out their times, places and splits on our Boston Marathon page. They are arranged in order of Official Time and Place. Note that Chip Time results and Official Time results are a bit scrambled, as some of us took as little as 48 seconds or as much as 27 minutes to get across the starting line.
Don't Be Late
Web Guy Jr. heard a rumor today that next week's race is going to start exactly at 8:30. That's right - no more moseying over to the start area around 8:35 and starting sometime around 8:40ish. 8:30. Don't blame Web Guy Jr. if you miss the start next week while you are in the little blue house. He warned you!
Pictures
At the top we have an altitude map of the course. Web Guy Jr. generated this from his fancy shmancey Polar watch. He's gone hi-tech.
At right is the altitude map for the Jeep Trail course he
recorded last week.
The out is the same of course, but you can really see the section on the trail.
Its the part that looks like a cliff face right where the 3rd mile begins.
Along the side, next to the results, we have Regular Bob Satterlee, giving the quality of writing on the web page a Thumbs Up. Then there's a photo from February, 2004. Then comes Paul Butler, cheerful, but not feeling like a winner. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil meeting another dragon, and six more feet after the race, two of which don't seem to be wearing traditional running shoes.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
