Old & New Faces Win Judds Bridge Out & Back

A smaller field toed the line this week at Roxbury to take on the Judds Bridge 4.8 mile out and back course.  There were 37 total runners and 3 ran alternates.   An old face (Ken Merrick) and a new face (Allison Lind) led them all across the line.

Ken Merrick, last year's point champion, ran a crafty race, letting the speedy Jeff Sheldon work the pace the first half of the race before taking the lead at the turn-around cones.  Dave Hunt followed Ken's lead, passing Jeff on the Rt. 67 hill, and challenging Ken.  Ken managed to fight off Dave, and crossed the line in 28:18.

Roxbury Rookie Allison Lind made an impressive debut, winning the women's race with a very fast 30:30 (6:21 pace) and taking 7th place overall.  She competed at the 5k and 10k distances for Florida State and claims to be a bit rusty.  We didn't see any signs of that rust, and hope she'll be back at Roxbury.  Theresa Krebs and Pam Quist took 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In other news Lee Ann Zarger was able to mix business and pleasure by completing a Post Office chore in the middle of running her alternate Roxbury course.  That may be a first, but shouldn't surprise anyone who's run at Roxbury at least once.  We keep it low-key.  Web Guy Jr. may take that idea and run with it - instead of dropping off those Net Flix on the way home, why not pop them in the mailbox on the way by?

Vermont City Marathon Results
Mark LoSacco - 3:13:21 (chip time of 3:13:16, splits of 1:36:08/1:37:13) 121st place
Tom McNulty - 4:57:41 (chip time of 4:55:35, splits of 2:21:24/2L34:11) 2037th place

Congratulations to both.  You can check complete results at http://www.runvermont.org/.

Safety

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

It's come back to the Organizers that sometimes all those runners on the road confuse them.  This seems particularly common on the South Street courses like the one we ran this week.  On the High Bridge Road course, it is even worse because the fastest runners are already on their way back up the hill while some people are still on the way down.

We can help if we try to all stay on the same side of the road when there is traffic.  It also helps to "call" the traffic like Dan Lamb does.  He can trumpet "Car Up!" or "Car Back!" loud enough that it almost scares the cars off the road.

Also, be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you us all five fingers.

Punctuality

We started almost on time today.  With your continued cooperation, we hope to continue.

Pictures

    We need some new pictures.

Up top we have an old picture of this week's winner Ken Merrick.  This was taken last year before he went off to run a great marathon at Philly.  Next we have Scott Benjamin giving the Safety Warning before the race.  Then we have a row of six people at an Awards Ceremony that followed a championship race.  Several of these folks live in Roxbury. People who think that Web Guy intentionally uses the most embarrassing photographs of people he can find should note that the other shot of these six people is from a different angle and it has an outhouse coming out of someone's head. The next shot is a post on the Pavilion, with Al Mletzko behind it.

Along the side, next to the results, we have Regular Bob Satterlee, giving the quality of writing on the web page a Thumbs Up.  Then there's a photo from February, 2004. Then comes Paul Butler, cheerful, but not feeling like a winner. Way down at the bottom we have Fossil meeting another dragon, and six more feet after the race, two of which don't seem to be wearing traditional running shoes.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
