2.4 Miles - Down Chalybes June 25, 2005 8:30 am. Rapidly getting hot! |
|
Mike Abraham, coach of the New Milford High School cross
country team, led a three person team consisting of himself, rival coach Marty
Ogden of Weston High School, and former team member Pete Gillen
to
win the annual Roxbury Team Race. The team finished 4th, 7th and 9th
overall with a total time of 45:25. They were about six minutes ahead of
the second place team of Ken Merrick, Bob Lewis and Katie Neils.
In the individual race, Jeff Sheldon and Allison Lind continued their winning ways with their eighth and fourth wins of the season respectively.
For the first time in a real long time, four people broke 14 minutes on the 2.4 mile course. It was an exciting race as it unfolded. It came down to Jeff Sheldon and Dan Murphy as they got to the last mile on South Street. Jeff still had some gas left, so he gradually pulled away for a 14-second win.
Jeff is trying to experiment with going out a little slower so Ken Merrick doesn't sneak up on him from behind and beat him quite so often. It's hard to tell if it worked, since this race was only 2.4 miles, but at least he's trying.
Rivalries
The Fossil - Zerbe rivalry is one of bitterest rivalries in all of sport. Though Mark Zerbe has a comfortable lead in the Prestigeous Roxbury Points Race, the Fossil had been enjoying a substantial lead in the head - to - head matchings. The usual story is that Mark goes out ahead, often completely out of sight, but the Fossil gets stronger as the race gets longer and comes back late in the race to edge the Zerb by a place or two. This week, Fossil ran out of race, and Mark won by two places, 8th to 10th. The Fossil pretended to be gracious, but the rivalry will certainly continue.
Certification
We do everything we can to measure the Roxbury Road Race courses accurately. Recently we bought an Oerth Counter, a gizmo that fits on a bicycle and measures how many times the wheel turns, in 15-degree increments. This can measure a course to within about ten inches, if we can use it accurately. Before the race this week, we started the process for measuring the Roxbury Marathon. It isn't until December, but these things take time and Scott plans ahead. Eventually, this will cause a whole bunch of orange paint marks to appear on our courses, create a pile of paperwork, and make an accurate Marathon course. Then we'll repeat the process and measure the regular courses to three or four decimal places. Ask to see the gizmo and we'll tell you all about it.
Safety

Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you us all five fingers.
Punctuality
We started almost on time today. With your continued cooperation, we hope to continue.
Pictures
These are last week's pictures, they came out
so well.
Up top, we have the guinea pigs assembling to listen to Scott's pre-race instructions. Then we have the speedy duo of Lou Denaro and Mark Andrejczyk discussing race strategy before the race. Below that a shot of Andrea Behling, Scott Benjamin and Bob Satterlee handing in their sticks. That shot is followed up with one of recent Roxbury regular and Warren Street runner Mike "Torpedo" Ruospo chatting it up with race director Bob Lewis. At right we have Dave DeBoy, Tom McNulty and others watching the earlier runners kick off.
Along the side of the results, we have Allison Lind along with the Hahns. Then Christina Clark in a great action shot as she launches off the starting line. Below that, shots of Diane Hasz and Ron Karl our trusty finish volunteers this week.
Way down at the bottom, we have the Fossil with his friend the dragon, and three sets of mystery feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
