Hunt & Lind Repeat at Bill Burley Classic

This week's race was a special one.  50 runners paid their five dollar entry fees and lined up to run the Bill Burley Classic race.  The race serves as Roxbury's mid-summer championship and was run over the very challenging Squire Road five mile course.  Last week's winners David Hunt and Allison Lind ran repeat performances and scored themselves gift certificates to boot.

The leaders paced the beginning of the race conservatively, and by the one mile mark there was a large pack of about 9 runners chasing an early leader.  Its easy to stay together over the opening downhill section of the course, but as the hills hit hard the pack thinned.  Bt the time the leaders hit the short out-and-back before the home stretch, Dave Hunt and Jeff Sheldon were running side by side with Ken chasing.  Dave managed to best Jeff by a small margin of 4 seconds, crossing in 30:04.

Allison Lind had her best finish over the course of her 6-win streak (she's undefeated), finishing fourth overall in 31:19.  Second, Third and Fourth went to Theresa Krebs, Andrea Behling and Pam Quist.

Honorable Mention

Honorable mention this week goes to 11 year-old Elizabeth for running the tough Squire Road course plus an extra mile!  Elizabeth accidentally missed the cones at the turn around and added more distance to her course.  We all hope she'll come back soon and we promise we won't make her run farther than everyone else again.  Elizabeth's pace per mile has been adjusted to account for the extra distance she ran.

Special Awards

After the race awards were given out to today's winners Allison and David.  Mike Abraham was given an award for his first place finish in last year's first ever Roxbury Marathon.  Scott Benjamin was given an Outstanding Achievement award honoring him for all the work he does for the race series.

Rivalries

All the Fossil-based rivalries were put on hold this week as he missed another race.  Web Guy Jr. thinks he is licking his wounds from last week and re-grouping for the next race.

The Bevy is Back.  As mentioned last week, four out of the five Levy's returned to Roxbury for the summer. One is taking a summer course at Brown and will join the Bevy in two or three weeks.  The Levy's love the Squire Rd. course as they make sure to return each year just in time for the race.

Certification

We do everything we can to measure the Roxbury Road Race courses accurately.  Last week, four of us, Scott Benjamin, Mark LoSacco, Bob Lewis and Ed Sandifer, stayed after to measure the Jogging Track. We will use this for our Calibration Course. We had to measure it twice, once each direction, with a 100 foot steel tape bought especially for the purpose.  It measured out to be 0.415 miles, astonishingly close to the 0.41 miles we'd been calling it.  It measured one foot longer one way than the other way, well within the allowable margin for error.

We've bought a revolution counter for a bicycle, called an Oerth-Jones counter.  The next phase will be to calibrate the bicycle on the Calibration Course and measure part of the Marathon Course.  We will probably do the 3.55 mile course first, and do the link to Judd's Bridge later in July.

Safety

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you us all five fingers.

Punctuality

We started almost on time today.  With your continued cooperation, we hope to continue.

Pictures

These are last week's pictures, they came out so well.

Up top, we have an altitude graph of the Squire Road course.  Does it do the pain justice?  Then we have the speedy duo of Lou Denaro and Mark Andrejczyk discussing race strategy before the race.   Below that a shot of Andrea Behling, Scott Benjamin and Bob Satterlee handing in their sticks.  That shot is followed up with one of recent Roxbury regular and Warren Street runner Mike "Torpedo" Ruospo chatting it up with race director Bob Lewis.  At right we have Dave DeBoy, Tom McNulty and others watching the earlier runners kick off.

Along the side of the results, we have Allison Lind along with the Hahns.  Then Christina Clark in a great action shot as she launches off the starting line.  Below that, shots of Diane Hasz and Ron Karl our trusty finish volunteers this week.

Way down at the bottom, we have the Fossil with his friend the dragon, and three sets of mystery feet.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
