6.4 miles - Falls Road August 6, 2005 8:30 am. 70 degrees, sunny, dry |
|

On a deceivingly warm day Ken Merrick and Allison Lind managed to beat the heat and the rest of the Roxbury field over the 6.4 mile Falls Road course. For most of the race Ken and Mark Andrejczyk were together with Pete Gillen and Allison Lind trailing. Pete surged over the last 2 miles to pass Mark and finish second. Pete's Hartford Marathon training is really starting to kick in. For Ken, this was his 3rd victory of the year. His finish time of 39:41 works out to 6:12 pace.
Allison missed the last Roxbury race, but showed up today to take home her 8th win with a time of 40:22 (6:18 pace). She's climbing the ladder in the overall points standings and has moved into 6th place in the women's standings.
Roxbury Runners in The News
Andrea Behling and Kurt Thoennessen missed the race this week. They had a good excuse. They were getting married today! Congratulations and all the best to both of them!
Jeff Sheldon finally missed a race, but after a strong showing at the New Milford 8 Mile race last weekend he deserves a week off. Jeff and many other Roxbury regulars ran the challenging New Milford race and did us proud. Alana Levy won her age group, followed by Laura Herman, and Allison Lind was third in hers. Ken Merrick and Andy Morehouse took second and third in their age group, and Lou Denaro took third in his. Jeff Sheldon was the top finishing Roxbury regular in 11th place. Full results here.

In the New Milford 5k, Katie Neils took 3rd in her age group. In other age group results from the 5k, Sinead won hers, Al Mletzko was third and Charlie Euston second.
Wendy Carlson and Pam Quist both missed this week. On Friday they both ran (and swam and cycled) the triathlon in Bantam and WON their divisions. Congratulations, and we'll accept that excuse for missing Roxbury.

Marathon Measures Short
WebGuy and Scott Benjamin spent Thursday measuring the Judds Bridge Road section of the Marathon course, and on the way past they measured the 4.8 mile course that turns around part way down Judds Bridge Road. There's good news and bad news.
The good news is that the 4.8 mile course is accurate. It measures at 2.427 miles to the turnaround, hence 4.854 miles for the course. That's 95 yards long, and that's fine, but we'll probably start calling it the 4.85 mile course. Then it's only 7 yards long.
On the o
ther
hand, the trip to Judds Bridge that we hoped would be 4.15 miles each way came
out only 4.06 miles each way. That leaves our marathon 260 yards short if
we can run on the jogging track. If the weather's bad and we can't use
that, then we're 723 yards short. We'll have to think about what to do,
but in the first case we'll probably move the start out past the pavilion and
about a third of the way around the jogging track. In the second case,
we'll probably add a little out-and-back to the start out Hemlock or
something. Think about it and give us your opinions. It's your $5
entry fee.
Next on the agenda is to measure the 5k course for the Thanksgiving Race.
And to do a bunch of paperwork.
Safety

Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you us all five fingers.
Punctuality
We started almost on time today. With your continued cooperation, we hope to continue.
Some New Pictures
Up top, we have this week's only new picture, a close-up of the fancy Jones-Oerth counter we bought a few weeks ago to use in calibrating the courses.
Then we have Bob Satterlee chatting with Allison Lind before the race. What's John Kane doing in the background? Then a picture of the Fossil in his cool shades, and a shot of two Levy's getting ready before the race.
A bit farther down we have Dermott
Quigley, our correspondent in Ireland, the one whose eMail uses green
electrons. He was in America to check up on the races, and while he's here
he's visiting his relatives, including his daughter Sinnead. He'll be
around for a couple of weeks. Here he's discussing issues with Chris
"Critter" Powderly.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Christina Clark going fast, and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
