2005 Roxbury Race #25

6.7 miles - Painter Ridge

August 13, 2005

8:30 am. 82 degrees, hazy, humid, harsh

August 20 race shortened!

It was so hot this week that for next week we decided to run the 3.95 mile Jeep Trail course instead of the longer 7.3 mile course.  We'll do the longer course sometime later in the season.  Note: August 27 will be the 8.1 mile Judd's Bridge course.

How to Cook a Runner

Take a bad air day, when the television weathercasters are warning about ozone and particulate pollution.  Heat the air to 82 degrees.  Add all available humidity, so that the shadows are fuzzy and the hillsides dim from the haze.  Then turn loose 48 runners on the longest Roxbury Race of the year. Everyone survived, but there are some pretty big numbers in that "Minutes per Mile" column.

There was quite a battle for the win.  Rookies Jim Zoldy and Luis Amaral only show up once or twice a year, but when they do, they usually win. This year they showed up on the same day and found Jeff Sheldon, Ken Merrick and Allison Lind all willing to do battle.  Zoldy and Amaral took control on Painter Ridge, though, and then Amaral took it in the end by about 45 seconds.  Allison Lind won for the women by the widest margin ever recorded. She is very good.

Additional New Milford results

There were so many Roxbury Regulars in New Milford that we missed a few.  Our Bad, and we apologize.  Here is some eMail we got on the subject:

Ed,

You missed one of the slow runners from the 8 miler.  He wasn't quick but he beat his time from last year by 5 seconds.  See below for the info on that mystery runner.

Hey Ed,

You did not list me among the Roxbury finishers at New Milford! One tick of the clock behind Mr. Denaro. Please fix that. I want to get some credit for my near-barf experience. Anyway Lou caught me around 5 miles after I had passed him early. We ran together the rest of the way. I would pull away from him on up hills and he would catch me on the down. We ran the final straight away neck and neck then he burst across the finish to grab the 40-49 third. Another guy with a story to tell about kicking my butt. You - Boston 1990, Mike - July 4th 2000, Lou - New Milford 2005. Why do I run? After finishing I thought I was going to get sick for a moment then the monument passed. Then I went to step out of the finishing area but remembered I had to take off my chip so I sat down next to Lou or he sat down next to me, I can't remember, and we talked about how tired we were. So anyway how are you? Sorry I missed the Sunday run but I had to get some things done at the house. Besides my calf got pretty sore after New Milford so I was nervously cautious with my running last week. better this week despite some poor runs. Very tired after the NMRR

Talk to you soon

Marathon Measures Short

We reported last week on recent developments in measuring the Marathon course.  We reported:

  1. We had already measured the Hemlock Road course using the Jogging Path at 3.5893 miles.
  2. The Hemlock Road course without the Jogging Path measures at 3.5361 miles, not 3.55 as we've been saying for the last 15 years.
  3. The 4.8 mile course is accurate.  It measures 4.85 miles, and that's good enough.
  4. Judds Bridge that we hoped would be 4.15 miles each way came out only 4.06 miles each way.
  5. Items 1 and 4 above mean that the "marathon" we ran last December was about 260 yards short.

We asked people last week what they wanted to do about the Marathon, and most people seem to prefer moving the turn-around point on Judd's Bridge out the necessary 130 yards.  We'll go down there with the Steel Tape and figure out where that takes us to.

This Thursday we're planning to measure the Thanksgiving Day race and make it an accurate 5k.  Then we still have  to do a bunch of paperwork.

Safety

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you us all five fingers.

Punctuality

We started almost on time today.  With your continued cooperation, we hope to continue.

Last week's pictures

It was too hot to take pictures this week.  The sweat would have fried the camera, the same way it fried the rest of us.

Up top we have a close-up of the fancy Jones-Oerth counter we bought a few weeks ago to use in calibrating the courses.  Who's that peeking through the spokes?

Then we have Bob Satterlee chatting with Allison Lind before the race.  What's John Kane doing in the background?  Then a picture of the Fossil in his cool shades, and a shot of two Levy's getting ready before the race.

A bit farther down we have Dermott Quigley, our correspondent in Ireland, the one whose eMail uses green electrons.  He was in America to check up on the races, and while he's here he's visiting his relatives, including his daughter Sinnead.  He'll be around for a couple of weeks.  Here he's discussing issues with Chris "Critter" Powderly.

Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background.  Then there's a shot of Christina Clark going fast, and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
