3.95 miles - Jeep Trail August 20, 2005 8:30 am. 75 degrees, overcast |
|
Hot or cold, longer or shorter, sun or clouds, Allison Lind and Luis Amaral are
tough to beat at Roxbury. Allison has run ten times and won ten times this
year. Luis has only run twice, but he also is undefeated.
After last week's sweat bath that saw Luis win in only a 6:15 pace, this week the top five finishers all broke six minutes per mile, making it one of the faster races of the year.
Over 50 runners participated this week, bringing the average field for the year to 48.
Personals
Note the name in 33rd position. Andrea will be back before very long.
Shiloh is back and looking good. Her recent hiatus was caused by a hip injury, not by anything more serious. Welcome back.
Older racing fans will remember when Decio Tenreiro dominated Danbury High School cross country. We think this was his Roxbury debut. Welcome.
Did anyone stop at the tag sales after the race today? There were a couple of large ones.
Visit the Bridgewater Fair this year if you get a chance. It's the first time in a decade that Roxbury old-timer Dave Harvey hasn't been running the Fried Dough Tent, but he might be working there. Also, check sewing by the Fossil's daughter, Victoria Sandifer. And spend money; it benefits the Bridgewater Fire Department.
Measurement tales
We reported
last week on recent developments in measuring the
Marathon course. We
reported:
We asked people last week what they wanted to do about the Marathon, and most people seem to prefer moving the turn-around point on Judd's Bridge out the necessary 130 yards. We'll go down there with the Steel Tape and figure out where that takes us to.
Last Thursday, Scott Benjamin and the Fossil measured the course for the Thanksgiving Day race. The calibration stage went very well, but measuring the course itself indicated that the course is 0.073% longer going up Chalybes than it is coming down. This was probably because Fossil got stuck in too big a gear going up the hill and he probably wobbled too much. (He's lucky he made it at all) You're only allowed 0.080% difference, and this is too close to the limit, so we'll probably measure it again to try to get a more accurate reading. Fossil will have to wait until his lame hamstring recovers, though.
Safety

Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you us all five fingers.
Punctuality
We started almost on time today. With your continued cooperation, we hope to continue.
This week's pictures
Up top we have Bob Lewis acting as caddy for Paul Butler. We had told them that the turnaround point in today's race was "far away." They apparently heard "fairway," so Paul brought his golf clubs.
Then we see this week's top finishers ignoring the yellow "slow" sign as they go out for extra miles after the race.
Then long-time Roxbury Regular Charlie Euston motoring towards the finish line in today's race.
A bit farther down we have Dermott
Quigley, our correspondent in Ireland, the one whose eMail uses green
electrons. He was in America to check up on the races, and while he's here
he's visiting his relatives, including his daughter Sinnead. He'll be
around for a couple of weeks. Here he's discussing issues with Chris
"Critter" Powderly.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Christina Clark going fast, and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
We have more great pictures from this week's race, but Web Guy didn't find enough to write about, so there isn't room. Maybe we'll use some of them next week.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
