We had so much fun on Ranney Hill last week that we did the same course again
this week, though without the Gunnery and New Milford cross country teams, and
with only ordinary instead of spectacular weather, the field was less than half
as big as last week's record field. Also, times were a bit slower (see
below) in part because some people were taking it easy before races in Southbury
and Brewster the next day.
In the end, Ken Merrick continued his come-back with his fourth win of the season, about 45 seconds ahead of rookie John Hirsch. Allison Lind notched her 14th win of the season, 6th place over-all, ahead of long-time Roxbury Regular Pam Quist, who finished 10th.
This week vs. Last week
Of 23 people who ran this course both last week and this, only 7 managed to be faster this week. Fifteen were slower, and Mike Abraham ran 27:00 both times. On the average, we were only 8 seconds slower, but Prasama saved us on that statistic by running 4:20 faster this week. Eight people were more than a minute slower.
We have two excuses. Last week, there were 80 people running. Big race, exciting, beautiful weather. People run fast. Also, Sunday there are some other races. A few people were resting up.
In any case, usually we're faster the second time we run a given course. This time we were slower.
Safety
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top is a shot of this week's winner Allison Lind.
A bit farther down we have Dermott
Quigley, our correspondent in Ireland, the one whose eMail uses green
electrons. He was in America to check up on the races, and while he's here
he's visiting his relatives, including his daughter Sinnead. He'll be
around for a couple of weeks. Here he's discussing issues with Chris
"Critter" Powderly.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Christina Clark going fast, and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
We have more great pictures from this week's race, but Web Guy didn't find enough to write about, so there isn't room. Maybe we'll use some of them next week.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
