3.51 miles - Up Hemlock September 24, 2005 8:30 am. 60 degrees, sunny, crisp, chillier than we're used to |
|
Luis Amaral led Jeff Sheldon and Ken Merrick on a merry chase for most of
Saturday's 5.51 mile race, before pulling away near the finish for a
twelve-second victory over Ken. Jeff was only about four seconds behind,
and Dave Dunleavy had clear views of the finish as well, just a few seconds
farther back.
Meanwhile, Allison Lind has been stalking Mike Abraham for some time now. This week, Abe couldn't hold the pace and took an eleven second hit.
A little later in the race, spectators were treated to the comedy of the Fossil trying to sprint at the finish, as he barely held off a strong finish by Pam Quist. You might say the Fossil "won" the sprint, but what had been a 60 yard lead just 300 yards from the finish was more like six yards when they crossed the line.
Timing problems
The Stopwatch Gremlin was back again this
week, as the paper jammed in the printer-stopwatch, and then someone
inadvertently pressed the "reset" button and deleted the times from
memory. Fortunately, the gentleman with the salt-and-pepper
hair who had been operating the
stopwatch
had realized there might be a problem, and starting with the 19th finisher,
Scott Benjamin, our condiment-topped course official had written down most of
the times by hand, just as a back-up, and we were able to recover all but 11 of
the 51 times.
If we missed your time, or if we got it wrong, let WebGuy know at esandifer (at) earthlink (dot) net.
Thanks to Rapid Lynn Zuback for the two times she sent. Nine to go. Katie Neils sent her time, too. Now just eight to go. And another one from Chris Deming. Seven. And WebGuy remembers seeing Walt Schuttler finishing with Carl Hunt, so we'll give Walt a time one second faster than Carl, and that leaves us six. Mike Mayer checked in, reducing it to five. John Murphy Jr's eMail has it down to just four.
Safety
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Up top is a shot of this week's winner Allison Lind. We're thinking of making this picture permanent. Or maybe another picture of Allison, now in her third week of graduate school at Columbia.
Below that, we have a picture from last year, this week, when a hot air balloon launched from the Hurlburt Recreation Area. I was taking a picture of the balloon, and Ken Merrick got in the way.
A bit farther down we have Dermott
Quigley, our correspondent in Ireland, the one whose eMail uses green
electrons. He was in America to check up on the races, and while he's here
he's visiting his relatives, including his daughter Sinnead. Here he's discussing issues with Chris
"Critter" Powderly.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Christina Clark going fast, and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
We have more great pictures from this week's race, but Web Guy didn't find enough to write about, so there isn't room. Maybe we'll use some of them next week.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
