Nine seconds could have changed everything.
Among the women, Ellen McCurtin won her second race of the season with a
one-second come-from-behind win over last week's winner Pam Quist.
Caroline White was just 20 seconds farther back, and New Milford High School
star Laura Hermann was just a minute back from that.
Among the men, last week's winner fared better. Jeff Sheldon held back a tough-finishing Hans Put by six seconds and logged his 16th win of the season. The 52 points he earned left him needing only 77 points to reach the unprecedented pinnacle of 2000 points in the Prestigious Roxbury Point System.
Mark Andrejczyk and Mark LoSacco finished at ten-second intervals behind Hans.
Thanksgiving Race
It's not part of the Series, but it's part of the Roxbury Experience. The 3.0 mile Thanksgiving Race and Race for the Cure will begin at 9:30. Registration for some time before. The race is from the Congregational Church, about a quarter of a mile east of the Monument, at the base of Good Hill Road.
Work up a good appetite, spend some time with good friends, and support a REALLY good cause.
Personalities
Nine-year old Eric Winkelstern ran his second
and longest race of the season, finishing 31st in an 8:08 pace. He had
hoped to run an 8:00 pace, but perhaps underestimated the topographical
challenges (that means "hilliness") in Roxbury, so we hope he's
satisfied with the effort. He was slightly faster back on July 2 when we
ran the much-easier (and a little shorter) 3.55 mile course down Hemlock at
7:50. (That course is now known to be just a little bit short, so he was
probably more like 7:55 pace.) Welcome to t
he
world of racing, Eric.
Meanwhile, Eric's Mom, Alex, was the Lady with the Stopwatch today, bundled in that hooded jacket. Dad Ken held the coffee, and little brother Gregory bustled around staying out of trouble and having fun.
The Jeff Tindell-Lou Denaro rivalry continued this week. Last week it wasn't close. This week, Lou came back from about 15 seconds behind on the big Ranney Hill climb to catch Jeff near the Monument. Lou took the lead as they turned on to West Apple Lane (at which time they dumped the Fossil like a bag of trash, but Jeff had been doing a "Stealth Surge" for half a mile, and found an extra gear at the finish to pull away for a four second win.
Next
Week's Course
Traditionally, the last two races of the year are on the popular 2.4 mile Chalybes Road course. Next week, we'll go up the hill. If conditions permit, we will finish the regular season on December 3 going down the hill. If it looks icy, we'll change our minds at the last minute and go up the hill instead.
The December 3 race will be followed by the annual Awards Ceremony.
Marathon
The Second Ever Roxbury Marathon will be on December 10. The course is not yet certified, but all the field work for certifying it is finished, so we know it is accurate.
The race will begin at 8:30. Registration will end just about ten minutes earlier than that and costs $5.
There will be team events as well.
Safety
Now that autumn is here, the sun is lower in the sky at 8:30 and the drivers might have trouble seeing us. Be extra careful.
It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible. Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's more fun if you run well
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Tom McNulty is running in a sunbeam in the top picture. Tom keeps getting a little faster, a little at a time, and now we know his secret. He's getting solar energy from this magic sunbeam.
Below that, we see Eric Winklestern, looking at the course with pacer Scot Killen. In the background, we see lots of people we know, Nelson Azevedo, Katie Neils, Ken Merrick, and a few people with half a head.
Then below that we have George Hermann motoring towards the finish line in today's race.
Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background. Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.
Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
