2005 Roxbury Race #40

2.4 miles - Up Chalybes

November 26, 2005

8:30 am. 20-25 degrees, overcast

Sheldon & Lind Conquer Chalybes

Jeff Sheldon and Allison Lind covered the 2.4 mile Up Chalybes course the fastest today.  Jeff took off fast and quickly built himself a comfortable lead that was never challenged.  He cruised home in 13:25 (5:35 pace).  Farther back Web Guy Jr. led a chase group to the foot of Chalybes and was quickly overtaken by Dangerous Ken Merrick, the speedy Dave Harvey, and Brian Vanderheiden.  Jr. managed to mount a comeback on the downhill but failed to catch Ken.  Meanwhile Abe made a surge of his own to finish fourth.  It was a fun day of racing, with 8 runners covering the course in under 15 minutes.

Allison Lind was the fastest woman today and was 8th overall in 14:57.  This was Allison's first race back from her fantastic marathon performance in NY several weeks ago.  Newcomer Sarah Sladen was second with a time of 15:42.  Jr. apologizes for any mis-spelled names.  Cold temperatures make for frozen fingers, and malfunctioning pens.

Thanksgiving Race Rescheduling

The Thanksgiving Day Race for the Cure was postponed due to the snowstorm.  The race directors are attempting to re-schedule it for a Sunday in mid to late January, with January 14 given as the most likely target.  The 3.0 mile race is from the Congregational Church, about a quarter of a mile east of the Monument, at the base of Good Hill Road.

Check this site for details as things get resolved.  Work up a good appetite, spend some time with good friends, and support a REALLY good cause.

Marathon

The Second Ever Roxbury Marathon will be on December 10.  The course is not yet certified, but all the field work for certifying it is finished, so we know it is accurate.

The race will begin at 8:30.  Registration will end just about ten minutes earlier than that and costs $5.

There will be team events as well.

T-Shirts!

Today was T-Shirt day with all race participants receiving this year's edition of the official Roxbury Road Race Series Tee.  Dave Harvey outdid himself with the design this year.  The shirts are funded by donations from runners and local area businesses.  The donations are also used to support the recreation area and local area High School cross-country and track  programs.

Next Week's Course

Traditionally, the last two races of the year are on the popular 2.4 mile Chalybes Road course.  This week, we went up the hill.  If conditions permit, we will finish the regular season next week going down the hill. If it looks icy, we'll change our minds at the last minute and go up the hill instead.

The December 3 race will be followed by the annual Awards Ceremony.

Safety

Now that autumn is here, the sun is lower in the sky at 8:30 and the drivers might have trouble seeing us.  Be extra careful.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as possible.  Also, it is safer if we are all on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's more fun if you run well

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

Mark Zerbe is running in his red vest in the top picture.  Mark missed today, but plans on running the Second Ever Roxbury Marathon in two weeks.  He's well prepared.  Word is that he actually ran the full marathon course last week after the race.

Below that we have Ken Merrick with a thought bubble over his head.  No, wait...  That's a hot air balloon.  Ken's coming off a great NY marathon experience himself and plans on running the Roxbury Marathon just for kicks.

Next is Web Guy Sr. looking ZZ Top-ish in some fine shades.  He didn't need to wear them today - it was too cloudy.  He's run a lot of marathons - we're guessing he won't be able to resist Roxbury's.

Along side the results we have Lynnie Zuback and Sinnead Blevio smiling, with Ron Karl behaving himself in the background.  Then there's a shot of Mark Zerbe in his red vest and then one of Fast Mario Hasz and his wife Diane, the Belle of the Finish Line.

Down at the bottom, we have three women smiling after the race, Fossil meeting a dragon in Germany, and a collection of three sets of feet.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
