Ken Merrick easily captured the second annual Roxbury Marathon, covering the icy 26.2-mile course in 3-hours, 23-minutes and 1-second over a field of 11 challengers in the individual competition.
Merrick, 36, a former football player at Danbury High School, took the lead in the Saturday, Dec. 10, event after Nick Gracie, 33, who lives in the New York City borough of Manhattan, failed to turn onto Judds Bridge Road on the 8.3-mile loop at the beginning of the race.
Gracie returned to the course after running part way up Route 199 and placed second in 3:25.52.
Merrick’s time was slower than the winning time in last year’s marathon. Mike Abraham, 46, of Roxbury captured the inaugural run last December in 3:11.38.
This year Abraham, a social studies teacher at New Milford High School, placed third in 3:37.32.
Caroline White and Jeff Field combined to win the team competition in 3:40.
Bob Lewis - the head director of the Roxbury Road Race Series, which sponsored the marathon – said that he was impressed that even though there was major snowstorm the day before, the field of individual competitors grew from eight finishers last year to 12 this year.
"We were pleased that runners from as far away as Salem, Mass., and Manchester, Conn., came," he said.
Participants in the weekly road race series have measured the course with an Oerth-counter and plan to submit the appropriate paper work soon to seek to have it certified so that starting next year entrants could qualify for the Boston Marathon by meeting their age-group standard.
