Pam
Quist added the Spring Championship to her accomplishments this year as she won
her seventh race of the 2006 Roxbury season, the 30th season of weekly racing in
Roxbury. She enjoyed a bit over a two minute gap on her competition, Jenna
Hannibal.
The men's side of the race went as a Championship ought to go. The top three runners went out hard and fast, and at the end only 10 seconds separated winner Steve Palmer from second place Jeff Sheldon, and Ken Merrick looked on from another 40 seconds back.
This week vs Last week
Thirty-eight of the 51 people who ran the 4.3 mile course competed on the same course last week. Of those, 20 were faster this week and 18 were slower. Those who sped up almost exactly balanced the ones who were slower, and overall we averaged two seconds slower this week. Bob Satterlee led the improvements, surging by 2:40, followed by Walt Schuttler, 2:02 faster.
At the other end of the list, Chris Norris was 2:28 slower. Chris Childs was our most consistent runner, one second slower this week than last, and Harry Ong was most typical, two seconds slower. Last week's winner, Ken Merrick, was 27 seconds slower this week, finishing third, but last week's time would have left him third this week as well.
Complete comparisons are in the table at the bottom of the page.
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much
as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind
curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all
on the same side of the road,
instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes more fun if you win. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Ed Sandifer is up top running smooth. Ed missed two weeks in a row for a trip to Texas, but he's back now. He re-qualified for Boston at Boston so he has reasons to be happy.
Most people were in too much of a hurry
to notice, but we ran past one of the area's most beautiful waterfalls
today. You might rem
ember
that just past the 2-mile mark, we crossed a new bridge built to replace the one
that washed out last fall. This picture is of the waterfall visible to the
left from that bridge.
Then we have Pam Quist, running out of the fog. She used the fog last week to sneak up on people. Ok - not really - but Web Guy Jr. is distracted tonight.
Along the side of the results, we have Mo van Moffaert about to get her stick from Ken Merrick, who won this week. Then there's a shot of two camera-shy runners, hiding where they think we won't take their pictures. After that there are two of our favorite runners, Dennis and George, warming up in the fog.
