A
week of rain, and threats of even more rain did not deter 63 runners from
showing up at the Hurlburt Recreation Area this Saturday for the 13th race of
the 2006 season. However, two of those 63 runners, Mo van Moffaert and
Harry Ong, did decide to turn back early in the race, and were there to help out
at the finish line.
With Pam Quist missing her first race of the season, the next round of her rivalry with Jenna Hannibal will have to wait until another week. Jenna won among the women by two and a half minutes, but second, third and fourth place finishers Katie Neils, Terri Lee and Nora Hulton were separated by only 16 seconds.
The men had a ferocious race that had three finishers in less than a minute. Ken Merrick and Jeff Sheldon arrived at the turn off South Street on to West Apple Lane together, but Ken's experience had the edge on Jeff's youth and speed, and Ken pulled away for a 17 second win. John Hirsch could only watch, and finished third.
Points and Attendance
This was the season's 13th race, so we're approximately 1/3 of the way through the season, the 30th season of the Roxbury Road Races. Six people still maintain perfect attendance records, and we thought it would be interesting to see where they stand in the Prestigious Roxbury Points Race. Rather than go cross-eyed looking at the complete standings, we used the magic of computers to make a table just of those strong-willed people who haven't missed Roxbury yet this year. Here it is:
| Place | Points | Name | Age | Div |
| 1 | 704 | Mike Abraham | 46 | |
| 2 | 702 | Mark LoSacco | 37 | |
| 15 | 452 | Scott Benjamin | 48 | |
| 41 | 207 | Steve Schoeller | 51 | |
| 54 | 158 | Sharon Gawe | 53 | F |
| 59 | 130 | Prasama Sangkachand | 46 | F |
Safety
Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.
It is safest if we face traffic as much
as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind
curves.) Also, it is much safer if we are all
on the same side of the road,
instead of making traffic drive between runners.
Fossil has three rules of running:
Be safe
Have fun
It's sometimes more fun if you win. Set goals you can realistically achieve.
Be nice to the drivers. For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury. Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.
This week's pictures
Ed Sandifer is up top running smooth. Ed missed two weeks in a row for a trip to Texas, but he's back now. He re-qualified for Boston at Boston so he has reasons to be happy.
Most people were in too much of a hurry
to notice, but we ran past one of the area's most beautiful waterfalls
today. You might rem
ember
last week that just past the 2-mile mark, we crossed a new bridge built to replace the one
that washed out last fall. This picture is of the waterfall visible to the
left from that bridge.
Then we have Pam Quist, running out of the fog.
Along the side of the results, we have Mo van Moffaert about to get her stick from Ken Merrick, who won this week. Then there's a shot of two camera-shy runners, hiding where they think we won't take their pictures. After that there are two of our favorite runners, Dennis and George, warming up in the fog.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on RunningInTheUSA and on HiTekRacing.com
