Roxbury Crowns Speed Demons
Merrick & Quist

The Roxbury Mile.  Love it or hate it, today was the day.  And this incarnation of the event crowned regular Roxbury winners Ken Merrick and Pam Quist.  This was Ken's 3rd win and Pam's 9th!  She's made quite a habit of this.

Ken paced himself well coming off a solid Moonlight 5k last night and chose to go out conservatively behind youngsters Geoffrey Schofield & Kevin Kauffman, and young at heart Mark LoSacco.  By the turn onto South Street Kevin was starting to fade and Ken took the lead.  He went on to finish in a solid 4:54, 10 seconds ahead of second place finisher Kevin Kauffman.

The ladies race was much more exciting with only two seconds separating rivals Pam Quist and Jenna Hannibal.  Pam won the matchup this time, covering the mile in 5:48.  Rematch!!!  We're scheduled to run the mile again on September 30th, so stay tuned!

Safety

Safety is important to us, as we don't run on closed roads and generally like each other.

It is safest if we face traffic as much as safe and possible. (on the other hand, avoid the inside of sharp, blind curves.)  Also, it is much safer if we are all  on the same side of the road, instead of making traffic drive between runners.

Fossil has three rules of running:

  1. Be safe

  2. Have fun

  3. It's sometimes more fun if you win.  Set goals you can realistically achieve.

Be nice to the drivers.  For the most part, they like us, and they are proud to have us running in Roxbury.  Smile, and, if you wave, be sure you use all five fingers.

This week's pictures

All new pictures this week courtesy of Web Guy Jr.'s Dad, Pete, who was visiting from the Adirondack region of NY.

First up is a photo of today's starting line during the pre-race instructions from Scott Benjamin.

Then we have Brian Vanderheiden, and Mark Andrejczyk warming up on the track.  That one is followed by a shot of John Boccuzzi and Mark LoSacco.

Then we have Kurt Thoennessen and Bob Saterlee working together to push over the wooden fence posts.

Along the side of the results, is a nice shot of Ken Merrick and Jenna Hannibal giving their unbiased opinions of running a one mile sprint at 8:30 AM on a Saturday.
